What the hell is mastering?

For a CD in one of my bands, we had mastering done at www.drtmastering.com for $400. Check the web site for details. What's cool is, you can get one song mastered for $40 to see if you like it. We did and we liked it enough to send it.

LOL - I'm a bit out of the loop out here - I thought maybe 'send it' had a meaning I didn't know about.
