Unpossible!
I know it stands for "front of house", but what the heck does that mean?

Sorry if this is a stupid question - atleast I asked in the newbies section.

From prosoundweb.com:

FOH Abbreviation for front of house, used to describe the main mixer usually located in the audience for sound reinforcement systems. Meant to differentiate the main house mixer from the monitor mixer normally located to the side of the stage.

Ever been to a concert and saw where the soundman sits? That's the "Front Of House".

which is funny, 'cause it's technically middle of house or back of house. you rarely ever see the engineer set up his console smack dab in front of the stage

Thanks - makes sense now. I just thought they were a "live" engineer.

I've met my share of foh engineers and I wouldn't describe many of them as 'live'

It's jargon. My how professions love their jargon. Keeps regular folk from understanding simple concepts.

By day I'm an accountant, we are much worse about this than sound technicians . . .

Ahh thanks for mentioning live. I was sitting here kicking myself... "damnit, what was that that I was trying to remember to look up??? what was it???"

I need to look at Ableton Live :)

Thanks!

:D Yo NL:

My colleagues have FOH all wrong.

FOH=a geographic linguistic pattern, as in,

One, Two, Three, FOH....

Sorry, Ah couldn't resist.

Green Hornet :p :p :D

As exhibited by stellar performer (*cough*cough*) J-Kwon in his major hit "Tipsy"...

One, here comes da two to da three to da foh
E'erbody drunk out on da dance floh
Baby girl ass giggle like she want moh
Like she a groupie and I ain't even on tour
Isn't that just AMAZING???

:D Don't you just love it?

BTW, there is also FOH GRA--some kind of goose liver paste.

What, you've never had it? Foie gras is not paste, just the liver of a specially fattened goose; although it's often made into pâté, it's excellent simply sautéed. Mmmmm good.

FWAH GRA is a better pronunciation.

FOH is used in a few professions and describes the part of an establishment where all the action happens (the nature of the action being dependent on the business of the establishment). This is also usually where you'll find the general public.

I used to be in catering and the eating area of a restaraunt was always referred to as front of house.
