Did someone say pads and ambience?
Absynth!
But to go that route you gotta answer Chrisjob's question
I guess that wasn't obvious enough
But seriously, if you're after pads and ambience, you definitely can't go wrong with Absynth
virtual synth. It comes with a bunch of waveforms, you can created single cycle waveforms from scratch, with version 2 you get the ability to import samples and use granular synthesis on them, has a boat load of filters, has multistage envelopes that you can apply to anything you wish (pitch, filter, waveshaper, FM amount, whatever) and sync them to tempo.
It definitely wouldn't be my first choice if I wanted Analog type sounds or emulation of acoustic instruments, but for evolving ambient sounds, strange drones, pads and stuff that's the synth I almost always turn to first.
Another good (and free) virtual synth for pads is Crystal. It's an FM synth, so, if you're not familiar with FM synthesis it can be daunting at first, but it is also capable of great ambient sounds among other things... and it is free! So download it and knock yourself out.
