What Songs Do You Associate with that Brand of Guitar?

Layla...Fender Strat...well..anything Clapton did, I automatically associate with a Strat...so that isn't using the ears...but association.:D

I gotta say, in my opinion, switching from Gibsons to Strats was the worst move Clapton ever made. He hasn't had much tone at all since then, and he had killer tone when he played Gibsons. "Spoonful" is just beautiful.

Again, this is just my opinion of course.

Any Jimmy Page stuff sounds like classic Les Paul tones--although the first Led Zepplin album was all done with a Telecaster-so you know those tones are in his hands for the most part.

Don't forget he used that ratty old Danelectro on lots of stuff too.

Great thread so far.

Listen to Comforably Numb, and just try to imagine any guitar other than a strat. If you can you're hallucinating.

Not to mention the arsenal of stomp boxes and rack effects he uses. It's not just the guitar in his case.

S
SG - Don't know - no one seems to have stayed with one too long.

Santana? During the late 60's through most of the 70's, I believe most of his songs were with his SG. Since then, it's been PRS.

Trivia - On "She's not there" he played a Strat.

I forgot about the Police.

Message In A Bottle - Telecaster

For your amusement (and it seemed to go with this topic)

I was just listening online to my favorite Seattle radio station KMTT....they do a daily program called "9 at 9", usually 9 songs from one year. Today, in honor of Leo Fender's birthday, they played "The 9 definitive Fender Strat performances"

While not all "definitive", they're some great Strat songs, except for perhaps "Wish You Were Here" which I didn't think add a Strat in it. Maybe I'm wrong

Here's the list

Friday August 10: The 9 definitive Fender Strat performances

  • Lenny – Stevie Ray Vaughan
  • Layla – Derek & The Dominos
  • Trademark – Eric Johnson
  • Sultans of Swing – Dire Straits
  • Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd
  • Waiting on the World to Change – John Mayer
  • The Wind Cries Mary – Jimi Hendrix
  • Pride (In the Name of Love) – U2
  • Thing Called Love – Bonnie Raitt

Message In A Bottle - Telecaster

That's interesting. I've never associated that song with the typical Tele sound. Although, I guess the thread is just which songs you associate with which instruments, and not neccessarily which songs typify an instrument's tone.

Sultans is a strat in the 2nd position (bridge and middle pickup)

Interestingly, the Strat he used to play that song only had a 3-position pickup selector switch. That was when you had to manually put it in between those two positions. That song was actually a large reason why Fender started making the five-position switch, or so I've read.

I have the original 3-position switch that came in my 62 reissue somewhere, I was thinking abotu throwing in in there. I hate the 1-2, 2-3 positions on the 5-way. I had an old saga strat kit that I bought when I was a kid and it had a 3-way. I swear it sounded better in the 1-2 position than the 5-ways. It's more likely nostalgia.

Strat: Little Wing, Wind Cries Mary, Sultans. It was nice to be able to play these songs on an actual Strat for the first time.

12 String Ricky: The Byrds.
