I am planning on adding some mics to my set up to use as room mics? What would you guys recommend? I don't have much money. Would I be better off with a single decent large diaphragm condenser like the "baby bottle"? Or would it be better to get some inexpensive matched pair like the Rode NT5's?

i'm partial to one room mic in addition to a pair of overheads. i find the room mic sits a little nicer in a dense mix when there's just one of them. just my experience, but then again it does depend on what you're recording and what the arrangement is like. my official suggestion, see if you can borrow some mics and experiment before you buy.

personally, i like to use SDC's on the OH's to pick up the details, and an LDC or ribbon on the room to pick up the beef

I'm currently using Ribbons as room mics. I like the way they don't pick up as much trashy cymbal splash. (My room is fairly live and bright.) Even a pretty cheap ribbon does a great job. One ribbon out in front of the Kick about 6 feet and 3-4 feet off the ground, compressed to #@$$ is a great sound.
