What should I do about my client?

Actualy, the keyboard player (the birde's best firend or something. Didn't really care...) wrote it. He played with lot's of great and famous artists (in Israely standards, at least :D ), but it's his first time recording one of his own songs. He was really happy with the result.
If I had a little more time, I'd do some more carefull editing, and check the mix on like 5 pairs of speakers, but we did the whole thing in a little more then 3 hours (Finished after 1AM. I wouldn't want my neighbours to come up and burn my monitors... :) ), so what's done is done.
I'm currently uploading it to my Nowhere page, it should be up in like 15 minutes or so.

This is such a great idea, I'm gonna do it. I think I'll put up a website, too. There are quite a few Karaoke nights in my area - lots of venues, and I don't think anyone is hustling studio time. My singer was over last night and he does the circuit a bit. He thinks the market is wide open.
Maybe it's whoring, but, by day I'm an industrial prostitute anyway. At least this way, I might see most of what I earn...

Darrin, what do you offer for the $100, and how do you get the Karaoke tracks?

You should probably decide at this point if continuing with this client will be worth it for you. If it's not...cut the ties now! If it is...I would tell him exactly what you told all of us!

It happens that I own a Karaoke rig and I gig with it from time to time. I have about 2000 songs on CDG.

But you can download some from Bearshare, I allow them to do 8 songs and burn them to one CD for the 100.00 with copies for 5.00 each so thats just Icing on the cake.

By the way KC is my turf so dont do it arround here.
 
Take the money for the basement and tell him to find another contractor.

So how long does it take to record 8 tracks?

I only use my studio for myself, for my own management company and our artists and that is it. However, I run another business as well. It is not important what it is only that it is a service type business. The thing is, there will always be those kind of clients and it does not matter what you do. Those that complain, those that do not understand, those that want more than they merit, those that think they deserve more than they merit. This is the nature of commerce. If you want to run a commercial studio, the measure of your success may be as much in your tolerance and ability to deal with these types as it is with the level of quailty of your best work. You will liekly never rid yourself of the headache people unless you are one of the very few who land at the very top of the heap. If so, god bless, if not, take it all with a grain of salt and, most importantly of all factors...GET PAID! That, more than anything, will help to justify such experiences.
 
Bad Clients

One more thing, everyone has bad clients no matter what you do. Yet they are mostly harmless. Me, I'll never forget the time it appeared that one of my clients had murdered another of my clients. Now, I never had any direct proof but the circumstantial proof was quite profound. These were some nasty clients and for all of your sakes, I hope you never get any like this. To me, your complaints sound minor by comparison. Again, this is the nature of commerce. What goes around and all that.

Its an unwritten rule in my book to post such a small part of a story and not to fill us in on the details. as we homewrecers need to know this whole story because I know I am curious.

write a contract

if he is not family, tell him to take a hike.

if he is family, tell him to take a hike before you kick his ass for being an idiot.

no, actually, tell him that you will do your job and he should do his(in more words). if he cant hold up to the bargain, the contract is broke and hes out the door, remind him that your job is not done, until the final mix is done.


if you all agree to specific terms on paper, you should have no hassle. if the musician is serious, this should be no problem.

i mean write every detail out, use this guy as a learning experience of what bad things can go wrong. write terms that specify his requirements for you to completely do your job.

in any case i would recomend some form of paper agreement to anybody, even if it is to your friend and you want to record thier band.

i would recomend writing up a simple contract for future customers. im sure you can write to a pro studio and get a similar contract or even speak to a lawyer, especially if you are serious.

definately get money up front, and make your customers sign something first, and if it is family, write a contract anyways.

if you get money up front, if you dont do your job, then the customer also has an agreement that protects him, make sure you define "your" job

This has been a great thread

No matter where you live we all have the same experiences.

If someone has real talent they don"t need us, just a microphone and a cassette recorder.

In the meantime we have to put up with the bullshit of how the the drums don't sound right,the guitar sounds thin, the bass is booming etc ,etc YOU HAVE MIXED IT WRONG! this is after they have spent 10 hours of recording time saying to each other how good it sounds without hearing what they are actually playing

At they end of the day,we all love the recording It just gets frustrating dealing with idiots - or are we the real idiots?
