i got 300 what pre should i buy or if cheap enough what pres should i buy

You can get two Rane MS1b mic preamps. There is no DI - just a mic pre. But if you are looking for a clean, transparent, uncolored sound, this little preamp is highly recommended.

You can get the Tampa for $328.00 all day. Do a Froogle search for them.

I own two Tampas and love them.

Its great for vocals and the compressor is the best you will find anywhere near the price

$300?
What kind of pres do you have now?

I vote for saving up.

for the price the m-audio will shock you... it shocked me.... i had one for 2 months before getiing a isa.
its not a isa but for the price it will give you a nice vocal sound.

I agree. The M-Audio Tampa is the best place to spend that money.

sounds like thats what im getting .... i dont have any other pres right now besides the ones featured with the mixer (im only 15)

what is make up gain when i look at the reviews on the M-audio Tampa on musicians friend everyone complains about makeup gain what is that

they are talking about the compressor on the unit. when you compress something normally you would use make up gain to bring the level back up to compensate for what you dynamically crushed down.

BTW dude you are on a roll, you're all over the place:)

Ya know I was thinking the same thing, but hey what 15 yr old isnt when they got 300.00 dollars to spend. Good Luck however you spend it. :D

Don't mean to cut in on somebodies topic but Nick seems pretty decided upon what he's getting, so for those who have used some or all of the following preamps....

How does the Tampa stack up against preamps like the brick, grace 101, and RNP....

In other words, if you were to rate these preamps in an order, what would that order be?

Well you can't those are all pres and the Tampa is a pre/compressor with the compressor being worth the price alone.

yeah im all over i just can't decide what to get monitors or this pre ... i need to become rich

I own a DPM3 and can't imagine the Tampa pre's being that much better. Are you paying mostly for the comp?

how does that sound chad (your talking about the one with two di boxes in it right) anyone eles have comments on the DPM3

It is a very sterile pre. There is no color added what so ever.

How about <$200?

Greetings all,

How about the best preamp for $100-$200 range? I already have a dual channel compressor, so just need preamp. Either a dual channel or two discrete singles. This will be for boosting mic signals into the Yamaha AW16G digital multitrack recorder. Not looking for electric guitar gain. Just boosting, warming up vocals and acoustic guitar. Home demo stuff, nothing too serious.

Thanks,
Rob
