I'm looking for a new mic. I know that this is subjective but I thought it would be interesting to see how you would add to this list and why. Primarily, I record "rock" bands in the range between John Cougar to Korn. All acoustic drums so far. Here's a list of what I currently have in the way of mics. What would you ad besides the ones I have listed ("I want to ad") below?

(1) Neumann TLM103
(4) Sennheiser 421 MKII
(5) SM 57
(1) SM 58
(1) D-112
(1) Beta 52
(1) BG4.0 (it basically shit!)
(2) C3000b
(2) SM98

I want to add:

4033
SM81
414

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

RF

414 or 4033

These two are some of the most versatile LD condensers out there ut seems like. Not to mention that most big studio's are going to have one or the other, though I think most would have at least 1 414. Although, the TLM103 seems as if it could cover that spot for now, I would certainly think about some SD condensers. A couple Shure sm81's or Neumann km184's or Oktava mk012's might be a better buy. Who knows, you might get asked to record a band or symphony one day. Right now you don't have the mics to do a nice stereo recording if you had to.

Final words = get a pair of good SD condensers.

414? I take it you're talkin' 'bout the AKG C?....If so I've used these quite abit before (the TL-II) and I thought it was GREAT!....realy flat (which was good in that particular room) so in my opinion it's not a 'magic' mic, but it's warm and give's a VERY realistic repro of the given sound with the exception ot the high end boost which I found great for Vocals, accustic and percussion.....the 414 to me is one of my favourite work horses....you can use it on just about anything and if it's a good room and the instrument sounds decent in the first place it does a great job....

Beezo....4033 and TLM103...Who make's 'em man?

4033 = Audio Technica

TLM103 = Neumann

FWIW, I have a pair of Marshall MXL 603S for stereo-pair SD condensers -- which I bought on recommendation of many here -- and I'm very happy with them. Cheep, too; Shreve music had 'em for like $140 for the pair if I remember correctly. At any rate, I remember it was $20 cheaper for the pair than anywhere else (of course then they proceeded to send me 1 microphone and a Macally computer keyboard, but everything was straightened out in a timely manner and I got my 2d mic).

Ahh...Cheers Beezo....BTW, what polar patern was that keyboard equipped with?

Geekgurl,

Where is Shreve Music? Is that near us (Bay Area) or is there a website?

Thanks,

It's actually in Shreveport Louisiana. Google search for a website? If you can't find it tell me and I'll rifle thru my tax-deduction receipts and get the contact info for ya.

I dig your username, BTW. I play mainly keyboards and bass ... hmm, possible to see WHY I may be into Rush? Fortunately I look nothing like Geddy Lee, though ... :)

That's good thing!! :D

Are you going to see them in September? I'm a gigantic fan of them but my wife and I are due to have a baby on Sept 10th so I'm not going to get to see them this time around!:( :( :( :( :( :(

Thanks for the info!!

I'm pretty excited..... I ordered 2 ECM8000's and a MXL603 today. I'll probably spring for the 4033(s) next. I also picked up another Beta 52 dirt cheap this afternoon.

Well, I guess I'm too late to chime in with a recommendation, but maybe on your next purchase; I'd look into a pair of Shure SM81's, or, if budget doesn't permit those, a pair of the MC 012's.

I did look into the 012's but I got a little spooked by all the threads here. I didn't want to plop down $200 for mics with such a range in reviews.

I bought the 8000's based on a thread that Harvey started and I figured that I shouold get them before the prices go up. I'm not a fan of Behringer products but for the reviews these mics got along with the price..... I couldn't go wrong. There still only $39.00.

In a month or so I'll probably get an SM81 (or two). After that, I'll be looking for a LD condensor.

THanks,
RF

I have never seen a bad review on the mc012 Ive have seen alot of threads dealing with guitar centers "pairs" and how well the will match together. But everyone seems to be happy with them.

But even I was spooked by this and I went with a pair of 603s.

You'll be happy with the ECM8000's. Great mic at that price point. I bought 2 of 'em on Harvey's recommendation as well.

I was especially suprised when (I think it was Harvey) said that in some applications, they were better than the SM81!

Go figure!

It all depends on the accoustics of your room, Rush.

It's easy for Harvey and others like him gush over the sound of a small-diaph. omni-directional condenser because it brings out the lush sound usually achieved by a substatial investment (well over $30K, I would imagine) in accoustical design, treatment, and reinforcement.

In this case, a $40 mic can very well sound like a $40K mic.

I've used the ecm8000's in some less-than-stellar accoustic spaces and what I get is a less-than-stellar sound. I've used it in really nice, big-sounding accoustic spaces, and got a dynamite sound out of them. The sound of your surrounding environment takes on a much bigger role with a small-diaph omni.

For a typical home studio (which usually means poor accoustics), I would go with the oktava mc012's or the Marshall mxl 603's. Reviews on the mc012 mixed? I don't know what you've been reading, but to me, they're about as much of a no-brainer as the RNC. One of the best deals in audio. SM-81's might be over-paying . . . although I do like the idea of a SDC with a bass rolloff a great deal.

Just my 2 cents on the matter.

The reviews have been very mixed. I know that I can get them cheap but I heard all the stories about the quality being different from different stores and in order to get them at the $199 price, I'd be getting them from a place that we were warned about. I'll probably get them eventually just to cure my gear fever but I figure why not get the ECM8000's out of the way first at $70 for the 2. The reviews on those were more of a preference issue than a quality one (except for the people who just can't stand Behringer prducts altogether).

Thanks,
RF
