Uhh...there is no best mic. I persoanlly like the AKG D112. It has enough oomph for tight bass but not too big of a sound on a normal kit to make it boomy.

AKG D12 and D12E were the most commonly used mics on kick drum on classic rock records. Worth hunting one down. And there's the newer D112 "egg", which while still isn't up to the D12E, IMO, is still a studio standard kick drum mic.

d112 rocked for me on this neo-classic rock project i did

it was the only thing that I could stand, seeing that the drummer had a 16 or 18" kick (tiny mofo), no hole in the head, and didn't beat kick all that hard. oh and he hated the sound with the head off, so I couldn't do it that way either.

Yep. EV RE-20's another classic kick drum mic. And let's not forget the U47. Not a bad little mic.

i think im getting Okatavia MC-012 for overheads, Shure SM-57 for snare, and AKG D112 for kick. are the Oktavias good for overheads

Last night I was listening to AC/DC in a friends car and I realized I really like the kick drum sound on the song Highway to Hell. Does anybody know the best way to get that sound. Not just the mic, but the tuning, heads, drum size, and mic position. I am still figuring what kit I want to get for my project studio and I would like to get my kick to sound like that. Thanks a lot!

I think most people get the matched pairs from the soundroom which run around $300 for the pair if I remeber correctly.

really i checked out soundrooms website and i couldn't find a actual matched pair
