what mics shoudl i use to mic my drums

i dont know what mics to buy for my drums. if i only had to pick 2 mics which ones should those be? and where should i put them

Some good cheap drum mic's are...

Kick... ATM25
Snare... Shure SM57
Overheads... a pair of Oktava MC-012's

I like the 4 mic placement.

With only two mic's... you could go with a kick and overhead mic, or if you have a good sounding room you play in, you could go with two room mic's... and sometimes two overheads can work.

You probably want at least 3 mics to mic a drum kit: 1 overhead, 1kick, 1 snare. Popular choices around here are:
Overheads: Oktava MK012, MXL 603, Studio Projects B1
Snare: Shure Sm57, Sennheiser 441
Kick: Audio Technica ATM25, Shure Beta52, AKG d112

Do a search for drums in the microphone forum & you'll find a wealth of info on these & other mics, and some tips on placement. Also read Harveys 'big thread'(Sticky:How does diaphragm size/polar pattern relate to mic applications? )

You will find very much discussion on the forums about the drum mic subject.

Look also at Fletcher's website http://www.mercenary.com/ for the three mic drum technique.

I once had a killer drumsound with only one $50 Radio Shack PZM (pressure zone microphone) on the right spot.

So, if you're on a tight budget (most 14 year olds are) I guess you'll have to find that 'sweet spot'.

yes it did help but i can only use two mics because im getting a tascam mkIII and they dont have enough inputs for ht e drum so how can i get a great soudn with two mics?

Id get a Studio projects B1 and use it as an overhead and an AT ATMPRO25 to use on the kick.....im picking it over a Marshall MXL603 only because it is more versatile in other areas.......that would be my 2 mic choice.....

as you decide you need more mics to do drums, the next addition would be a Shure sm57 to put on the snare.......

next would be a second B1 to go with stereo overheads........

I agree with Gidge on mic selection. You'll just have to spend some time working with mic placement until you get a good balance.

You won't! You might get an acceptable sound though. I would say get an AKG D112 ($200) for the kick and an AT Pro 37 ($140) for the overhead. You are gonna need phantom power for the 37 though and a good pre-amp will help a lot! If you could, I'd say get two of the Pro 37s for overheads... They pick up everything!
