What Mic's are you using with your MR-8's?

I'm using a:

MXL V57m large diaphram condenser

MXL 990 large diaphram condenser

Shure SM-57

Shure 55S (vintage Elvis stye mic)

Shure SM-58

a cheap Radio Shack sm-57 knockoff

a cheap Radio Shack small Condenser

also using an ART Tube MP Studio for a mic pre and also as a Bass DI

Having good success with a Yamah DG stomp guitar pre-amp effects/amp sim too!

I'm curious to know what others are using with or without decent results!!!!
 
Shure SM58 and beta 58. I get good sound with both, but the beta with the mic sim set to condenser works the best. I'm not sure if it applies to all dynamic mics, but these two that I have used do not give good results if used with the "tube" setting. The recorded sound is semi muffled.
 
Even though I have an Electro Voice PL 78, I'm only using the cheapy mic that came with the MR 8 package, and I really love the sound.
 
i've been getting the best results w/ the mr8's internal mic as well
(for acoustic/vocal songs).
i tried my radio shack cheapo dynamic mic and couldn't get anything.
i then plugged the radio shack dynamic into my zoom 9150 tube
preamp and got a sound for some experimental vocal loops.
not sure how it will work for "normal" vocals (it's a bit noisy).

but i'm researching condenser mics and will probably get one after
i finish my first batch of recordings w/ the mr8.

I'm using the audio technica ATM63 dynamic mic. Not a bad little mic but I'am going to order a studio Projects B1 today because I want to try recording vocals with a LD condenser mic. Using a Line 6 Pod for guitars with great results. I can't understand people that knock the POD. It's incredible value for money, just like the J-station and DGStomp. All these units really deliver the goods.
 
Got some of the same rig you've got Markophonic -- the MXL990 condenser mic coupled with the ART Tube MP preamp. Very sweet sounding setup. Never thought about using the MP as a bass DI-- great idea!

Im running the same set up as you are! Great for acoustic guitar! Tube mp sounds good for bass DI but needs compression.

I've did a lot more recording since my first post in this thread and have found out a few things about using a dynamic mic (Shure beta 58) with the MR-8 and no external preamp. In order to not have an abundance of pops (even using a filter) on vocals you have to be about 1' to 2' away from the mic. The mic still pics up good at this distance, but because of proximity effect the vocals sound "thin". This is because on this certain mic at more than 1 1/2' away frequencies below 300hz roll off. I have been able to remedy this by boosting at about 200hz by 1.5db. I'm thinking about getting a pre amp. Anyone have any ideas? I've thought about getting a condenser mic, but if I do I will have to buy both a preamp and condenser. And with a condenser I'll have to worry more about all the other sounds going on in my house whereas with the dynamic you don't have to worry as much.

I first tried friends' V-Tech (cheap dynamic) and SM-58 for acoustic guitar and vocal. V-Techs were tinny and awful, SM-58 was fair-a little heavy sounding, and kind of thick. Neither had enough output with the MR-8 preamp alone. Then I got an M-Audio Buddy preamp. That alone helps a lot, though there is not much headroom at all in the MR8 preamp, so the external preamp has to be used with care. Next came some condenser mics. Audio Technica AT-3035- large diaphragm. Very clear, completely uncolored, maybe a little lifeless. Great for voice. Guitar sounds a little dead. AT MB-4000-tiny diaphragm (but cheap). No bottom at all, not very clear. Better than the SM-58, but not in the 3035 league. Rode NT-3 - medium diaphragm. Wow. What a guitar mic! Crystal clear, natural, not a hint of distortion. Really, really good at every range of the guitar. The highs sparkle without being annoying in any way. This is supposed to be a 'dark' sounding mic, but I find it far more lively than the large diaphragms I've tried. The 3035 and NT-3 were both right at $100 on e-bay (the Rode was brand new, the AT looks like it), and both are seriously well built. I'd buy either again, but go to the Rode home page and listen to a couple of their clips--the NTK is seriously high on my have-to-hear-one-in-person list (but unfortunately out of my current price range, and it's hard to justify many mics when your only recorder (MR8) has only two inputs!). I also tried an Oktava 319 large diaprhagm. So noisy it sounded like I was recording on a cassette deck without Dolby, so I returned it. People have raved about them, but I apparently got one made on a Monday or Friday!

The MXL 990 was like $69 including case and a nice spider mount, and the Art Tube MP (OPL) preamp was $59. And no sales tax!
