Ok, i do vocals, guitar, bass, electric piano (synthesizer), violin sometimes, and drums.

I have one Shure SM57. Would my Antaras Mic Modeler I use on my computer as a plug in really make a difference for vocals?? I can't tell very well, but I haven't tried (wow i feel stupid).

If I need to full fill my dreams of all that stuff, like micing drums and stuff, could someone recommend me to a mic that is good for vocals, but not over 400 bucks?? or around there maybe?? I dunno, I'm probably gonna get maybe 2 more dynamics, or a pzm too, and then a nice mic for other stuff, but which one?? I've heard good stuff about the Rode NTK and hey, i guess I can go up to 500 bucks perhaps. peace.

This is what I would do (and want to in the near future),
C1 ($230, I think) - Vocals/AC Guitar
Marshall 603 ($69 ea.) - ac guitar/drum overhead
AKG D112 ($200) - Kick drum/Bass cab
SM57 ($80.) ea - E Guitar/snare/toms

And since you already have the 57, if you get a stereo pair of the 603s your lookin at just a little bit over your price range, around $570 (if I got all the prices right on the mics).

Excellent choices Tekker.....I would start off with the pair of 603's.....

You could record the drums with the 57 on the kick and the 603's as overheads and bass direct......overdub the guitar with a sm57.....electric piano direct.....violin with 603's.....and vocals with either the sm57 or the 603 or both.....603 bottoms out on vocals pretty easy from what I hear but if careful, it can be done.....

but before moving on to the next mic, Id look at the rest of your recording chain such as cables, preamps, soundcard, and possibly monitors.....

then Id look for a better vocal mic....Marshall MXLv67 or SPC1......

then the d112.....

That's a decent selection for around $500, but I'd bag the $219 D112 and get an Audio Technica ATM25 for $139 – which is very RE20-like, and can be used as an alternative vocal mic.

Nice recommends, Tekker. I really love it when people actually post recommends within the budget posted instead of trying to bump everythng up hundreds or thousands of dollars.

BTW, yes, you do want a C1!

C1 – $225

pair of MXL603's – $138

AT ATM25 – $139 [check at www.zzounds.com/a--2676837 for that price ]

Total: $502

Actually, one nudge you should consider is a pair of Oktava MC012's instead of the 603's. The M012's run $149 each at Guitar Center and they often have sales on pairs for even less. Would bring the total to $662, and very much worth the extra $160 investment.

Whats the c1's full name??

By the way, do you think I should change soundcard (project card to omni) first, or get more then one mic for recording first?? I'm sorta ya know, heh...yea.

hey, are you guys talking about the AKG C1000S??? condenser?? Errr, I can't find the C1 on zzounds...and i'm not sure what its full name is, everyone talks about it, I think i'll go for it. Are condensers ok for drums sometimes too?

sorry for posting so much, but I have another question.....

if you know about them...what do you think of the following mics??

Rode NT1 Studio Condenser Microphone
Rode NT3 Small Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone
AKG C1000S Stage and Studio Condenser Microphone
Shure SM81LC Cardioid Condenser Microphone
AKG C4000B Studio Condenser Microphone
CAD E100 Equitek Series Single Diaphragm Condenser Microphone
Sennheiser E602 Dynamic Cardioid Bass Drum Microphone
AKG C535EB Premium Performance Microphone
Audio Technica MB4000C Midnight Blues Condenser Microphone

ooohh, and I have this... AnTares Microphone Modeler..... give me your opinion on that please=).

Oh and does anyone know of a pretty descent preamp under 4 hundred at all?? (will the omni studio do?)

The brand name of my microphones are Studio Projects. The models are C1, C3, and T3. We use a very select distribution in the USA and choose not to be in many dealers by choice.

If you are looking for dealers, get to our site at www.studioprojectsusa.com at the top click on dealers. Sweetwater is our newest dealer and we welcome them aboard, but we have about 20 great dealers in the USA now, but will have about 40 by the end of the year.

mics???

I own a CAD E100. Unfortunately, I have been forced to do most of my recording work with it due to the fact that it's my only condenser mic.
To it's credit though, it 'll get the job done. If nothing else, I'm pleased to say that it's an American product.

On the SM81's: Industry standard, can't go wrong.

Mics are a great investment and it's hard to go wrong, however, I try to stay away from "latest thing" -types and go with what's been proven over time or take a look at the company's pedigree.

P.S.
Don't wast your money on microphone modeling. Keep your integrity and do without the real thing and be honest with what your do use with your head up high. Ask my friends: I've consistently impressed them with how I do so much with so little-and these guys are serious pro-attitude-types.

antares does have strengths and weakness. Of course it wont replace a rode nt1 with a telefunken u47 but it does a good job of adding a little more life to your recordings if you have a decent mic to begin with.

MDA,

Take my word for it...all the mics youll need for awhile are the sm57 you have, a pair of Marshall MXL603's, and either a Marshall MXLv67 or SPC1......about $350 for all 3......

CAD has many models of the single diaphragm mics made in China, so before you stand up and salute the flag, you may want to learn the truth about your mic first.

I won't swear to it, but I sure can find out from China if the E100 is made there, but I think it is.

I have a Cad E100 to me it sounds better than the Rode NT1
to me...Its not as crispy as the Rode.
Also have C1000s.. IMHO..They are not a very open sounding mic.
Also Shure SM81..To me the sound of this mic is very good..clean
and detailed.I think that you would have to go up to the Earthworks or the like to do better for detail and clearity..

Audio Technica 4033 v.s. Studio Projects C-1... A fight to the death or no comparison; who will decide?

What I'm saying is, which is the most versitle mic for vocals; the 4033 or C-1? Which is better for Rock? At Sweetwater the C-1 is $250 and a Musicians Friend the 4033 is $300.

My apologies to Alan Hyatt if I offended him. At this point, and with the exception of my AKG Tri-Power, all other mics in my cabinet are American.

I am quite aware of the fact that in this global economy, many parts are farmed out to other parts of the world and assembled in yet others.

I also believe that you must have quite a product on your hands due to the many pages of discussion here and elsewhere.
In closing, mics I am looking at upgrading to happen to be German, Baltic, etc... so in no way can I be accused of slamming you.

T. Alan Smith

P.S.
CAD has lower lines of mics that sure look as though they are Chinese.

T. Allen Smith,

I took no offense, and meant none, and I have made no claims of you slamming me. Its just that when I was in China last, I saw some CAD mics in the factories.

Unfortunately too many manufacturers claim product to be built in America when they are built in China. Some assemble in the USA, but you only have to assemble some 10% to make the made in America claim.

That means, you can stuff an import mic into a box, throw in a manual, add a clip, and claim your made in America. I think CAD is a good company and I am not saying they do that...

I should have put a :) after my salute the flag comment, because I meant it to be funny, not a dig, so that was my fault. :D:

No problem Alan. I just don't want to turn into one of those people that I've seen slamming you and your mic in other forums, that's all.
I truly have faith that you have come up woth a fine product, but I just have diferent feelings about it. that's all.

alright gidge, i'll go for your suggestion, should I also go for a C1?? Heard great stuff...
