Hello everyone, I'm looking to start playing trance music but don't know what kind of gear I need. I have a pretty good knowledge of music and I know my computer can handle everything speed-wise (Only drawbacks are that I don't have a sound card and I have Vista 64-bit which may cause compatibility issues with some soft/hardware, I already had trouble with an audio interface I previously used). I'm only 15 so I want to spend as little money as possible.

Thanks,
Jason

I don't make trance, but both past isues of Computer Music and Future Music magazines had large portions devoted to trance and house. Check em out @ your local bookstore.

Any MIDI sequencer with a collection of synths, plugins and samplers would be a good start.

Check kvraudio.com for synths/plugins/samplers etc. A lot of good freeware stuff on there.

not sure what your budget is....might be worth checking out Ableton Live. I have it at home and it's pretty good for that sort of thing.

Reaper is a good sequencer and doesn't cost a lot. However, I know it has MIDI capabilities, just not sure to what extent.

You will need some kind of sound card if you want to get any sound out of your computer. Does your computer have onboard sound? Onboard sound isn't perfect, but it will at least get you up and running. Although you could get a reasonable card for fairly cheap.

Will it all be electronica? No real instruments?

Then all you really need is a USB MIDI keyboard and some free synths and samplers like legion said...
