what kind of amp should someone get that is just starting out with a bass? How many watts? Thanks for the help

If you are going to be playing with other musicians (and what's the point of being a solo bassist?), then IMO buying anything with less than a hundred watts is a waste of your money. I would start at 200.

I second that. I've played with some 120W in two bands, but I've had to full tilt the amps.. now they are broken.

I agree with the others, if you will be playing with others (and I hope you will) get something with a bit of power. I would also recomend you get a small practice amp. By practice amp I mean something small enough so you wont disturb your family or neighbors, (bass tends to carry and bass lines are often annoying without the rest of the band,) but enough so that you can hear what you are doing. A practice amp does not need a lot of power(watts) but you do need to find one with a good clear sound and tone.
