I've found that kidz who are into jambands will go to all your shows, but the average commercial band, well, the commercial thing is shallow and don't hold a following. Creating community with your music and making it damn good jamming live improv will get the kids spreading your name. But the average modern "greenday" sound goin on, well, you're gonna have to get a record label to promote for you maybe.

Its a combination of things.
Be good. People don't want to pay cover charges and/or buy merch from crappy bands.
Hard work. You have to hit the streets. Make flyers, post them at every public place where your target audience might go to look for good shows.
Work the internet. A lot of local music scenes have some kind of website that someone has made to help it grow. Find message boards where people talk about the style of music you make, and announce your shows on those things. But don't just spam the boards with your shows. Mingle and make friends. People go to see their friends more often than other bands they don't know.
p.s. Eric Clapton packs stadiums now because he was made famous during the "British Invasion" of the 60's/70's. We aren't so lucky. But as for live shows, I don't think the issue is so much that you have to bounce off the walls and do a bunch of crazy clown crap, but that you have to be very passionate about your music. Whatever you are feeling, it will translate to the audience. Its a strange experience, a concert. They don't know you from Adam, but if you are having fun, and you are totally pumped up about the music and the lyrics, the audience can just feel that, and they respond to it. Even if you are a little less tight musically.

I agree with Lopp. opening up for a known local band and doing the best with the time you've got. then once you get to the point where the band you were opening up for doesn't want you around anymore because you are banging them out, then start doing your own shows.
we were doing 2 in-town clubs (thurs, fri) and an out of town club (sat) every week when we were a band.
not that its ever happened to me

It's not like it used to be. If you're overweight (or even just average looking), it's going to be a lot harder to make it in video age.
Example... Blues Traveler. John Popper wasn't in the videos until after they had sold a ton of records.
