What is wrong with my voice?

Anything can be accomplished if you work hard enough.
If someone's tone deaf it's game over.

Liken it to being colour blind.
You can practice telling red from blue all day long; It's never ever going to help.
(epic signature available above :p)

Many of you aren't even commenting about the original post but about how people who can't sing should just give up, or ranting which is kind of disappointing.........

I wanted to upload clips of me singing get some advice without any snide comments, and implement the advice I was given.

Welcome to the internet.

I do have a throat issue, but that can be corrected with different vocal techniques.

I don't think you do, or at least, it's not the cause of what I perceive to be your 'problem'.

It's been said: I think you're over cooking the emotion which results in you really holding back from actually singing.
The later clips in the thread are somewhat better.

I'm no vocal coach, but it sounds like lack of confidence.

Practice doing an impression of someone strong. Completely abandon your own style and just impersonate Sinatra for a few days.
Play his records loud and try to outshine him.
After a day or two come back to whatever it is you want to sing and bring some of that strength with you.
Of course, that's what I want to hear. It might not be what you want to do.

I really was just relying on the kindness of strangers.
Right. Very well then, you don't want CRITICISM you want validation. No one's putting you down, but to believe that ANYONE can sing is just wrong. It ain't so.

Dude, are you trying to sky us? There's nothing wrong with your voice that taking that piece of shit Phaser/Flanger off the whole track wouldn't fix. Food Luck,
Rod Norman

I know it's bad, but I just want some actually advice. My Mic is also pretty bad, sorry

Thank you in advance

I think you can become a Star !
Do not tell to anyone how it is recorded.
It is something new in audio recording :)

Hi there jds,

I agree with guitarplayr and would also like to add that I think you may be letting too much breath (air) out or pushing too much breath (air) out, so that will not help sustain the notes and the pitch. I would recommend as Rusty, to get a vocal coach, and better yet perhaps you can get "speech therapy". Believe or not some of these therapists are now using a technique called Estill Voice that teaches you all about the physiology of our voice in speaking and singing. It makes a great deal of sense and difference. I will sum something up about this technique. Basically singing (and even speaking) has a lot to do with how you valve your vocal chords and the muscles around it. For singing with more power without letting or pushing out too much air through the vocal chords (which can actually hurt your voice), you valve them close together. In other words, you close them. That will give you a more steady and powerful sound. If you want a breathy sound, then you keep them more open, but without pushing harshly. It's all very natural and very relaxed, no pressure. It takes training, but it is especially important to become aware of how the chords feel in each situation. That is the first step. There are many exercises that will teach you this and all the techniques on valving the chords and having the sound flow forward. Check out Estill Voice training, it's pretty good. Good luck :)

i dont think it's your voice , it almost sounds like your trying to talk while crying (no offense) or almost like an emo-ish thing going on. Your not projecting your voice really just kind of talking to music with emotion in your voice , listen to Snuff by slipknot (it sounds similiar to the style your going for) and try to sing a long to that, and study how he sings it. I'm not a vocal coach or anything but i think that'd be a good starting point, and of course the recording quality could be improved

completely agree!

Greeting from Hungary

Your voice is good, pitch is correct. Guitar sound very bad. Need for you good microfon, and after recording a little compressor and little reverb. Attached file recorded by only cheap Olympus digital voice recorder. Have nice day

Thanks for all the advice. I'll keep at it and hopefully I'll get better.

Thanks again, Jay

Please get a better recording tool @@ But as what I can gather your voice is great.

Jay,

I am a vocal music teacher and have my masters in music education. My wife has her masters in vocal performance and is a private voice teacher. First off, much of the "advice" that was given by some of these people was entirely wrong and potentialy harmful. Please do not "pick a higher key to help you go for it." Please do not "listen to other people and try to copy". How do you know the person your copying is doing anything right either? Not to mention you can copy someone's sound by doing everything wrong. So here is the best advise I can give you to help you along the way without actually meeting you and having a one-on-one session.

First: Voice is controlled by breath. The best way to help increase power and tone quality is by practicing good breathing. Breath deep and low. What that means is that the air is going in and down, causing expansion in your abdominal area with little raising of the chest or shoulders. Its akward at first, but key to taking in a good supportive breath without putting unwanted stress on your vocal chords. Practice breathing on its own, and then using these deep breaths to support long, slow warm-ups to help you get used to it.

Second: When using your voice to talk, do you notice any stress or much effort going on? Of course not! Effort should be at a minimum when your singing as well. To help try "talking" on pitch. Pick a pitch that is very comfortable in your speaking range and speak a sentence all on that pitch. Repeat, increasing pitch each time but trying to maintain the same mimimal effort level. As it gets higher, try not to pinch, strain, and especially dont start sticking your chin up to try and help, because it wont. Are you still breathing deep?

Third: Be yourself. Seriously, it sounds so dumb but the biggest problem a lot of singers have is that they are trying to hard to sound like someone else. God gave you your own voice for a reason. When you sing, it should sound like you. Dont try overly hard to sound like your favorite singer or to sound overly emotional or whatever, just be you.

Finally: Be confident. Holding back in any way because you doubt yourself will instantly wreck your tone and your technique. There is a balance between "don't overdo it" and "be confident" but find the sweet spot and let 'er rip. Don't hold back or you will never be pleased with your sound.

I hope that help.

P.S. Are you still breathing deep? (Serously, most important tip!)

YOu just need to improove your quality, you can't critisize yourself that way...

+1 here. Really, though, the work you need to do can't be learned on a forum in spite of any good advice given. Find yourself a GOOD voice teacher. If the most talented singers out there need teachers, why wouldn't you?

I'll have to agree with guitarplyr82 man. Keep it up though, don't give up.
