what is the best vocal studio mic ???

Hey everyone! I've got a new answer to this question. It's not as pithy as the time-honored "It depends.", which after all, is the one true answer. But I feel it's an answer which reflects my own personal philosopy of mic selection:

"That one over there. In the corner. No, the other one!"

I like the Dragonfly and the SolidTube (with the internal wind screen ripped out). The Studio Projects mics are very nice, but overpriced in Europe. The C414 is a great mic, but I would not choose it for vocals. Frankly, at the current European price point, I'd consider SolidTube, which many here do not love. Really, it sounds dark and distant until the wind screen is removed, and then, Hola!, it's a mic. The Dragonfly is a versatile mic good for clean vocals with a variety of other applications. I know it's hard to get suggestions, because your question has been asked so many times in so many different ways. A search on "best vocal mic" will produce more information than you can stand.-Richie

hehehe lusitana... mas ja sei de alguns microfones versateis para a voz... era isso o que queria saber... olha um conselho compra o material ai na honlando em portugal é tudo super caro...
 
I guess I'll put in my two cents!

I have a Dragonfly,it's very good for what your trying to do.
A definite good pop rock mic.
Clean and a very airy top end.
Really cuts through a dense mix.
Works great on doubling and harmonies.
Good on acoustic fingerpicking,and supposed to be one of the best for micing a guitar cab.

I think it's a great mic,but I lean towards a warm,woody acoustic sound.
I'm going to pick up a V67 tommorrow and try it.
Iv'e heard several recordings around here with it,and it always leaves me with the same impression,rich and warm.
Sounds like a warm 4033 to me.

Just because you have a thousand,dosn't mean you have to spend a thousand to get what you want!
Listen to some stuff in the clinic,see what mic there using,and Definitly go somewhere and try it out if you can.

Just my 2 cent's!:)

I'm going to have to agree with you on all accounts, here.

And I can attest firsthand that, yes, it is to die for on guitar cab. There is magic in this mic, no doubt.

On the other hand, as a vocal mic, it has a distinct sound that, like a lot of mics, is pretty hit-or-miss. It sounds brilliant stupendous, magic, etc. on the right voice . . . which is pretty much any voice that doesn't quite fit with the Audio Technica.

In other words, it's brilliant on most female vocals, and males with either a nasaly voice or one with a lot of high mids. Just the kind of voice that will sound irritating on an AT.

Alright, so I'm being wishy-washy here, so here goes: Pick up a Dragonfly and an Audio Technica 4033 or 4040 and between the two, I'm sure you'll be able to handle whatever is thrown at you. If I had to pick one mic, though, I think I'm leaning towards the Dragonfly.

Funny you should say that Chess,it's a great mic,like you said,but just dosn't quite fit with my voice.
Every time I hear a good song with the 4033,I think,"that would sound good on my voice!"
I think it's out of production now though,isn't it?

I'm picking up a V67 tommorrow,kind of similar to the 4033,don't you think?

Not exactly. The 4033 has sort of high-midrangy thing going on, while the v67 has a low-midrangy thing going on.

Muzeman, do you ever record any electric guitar? If so, then you owe it to yourself to try the D-fly on it the same way you would a 57 . . . maybe an inch farther back. Unbelieveable. You'll fall in love with it all over again. :D
