I'll have to agree. Actually you don't even need $300. Take a look at the M-Audio Audiophile 24/96. It has 24-bit 96khz recording, unbalanced ins and outs and S/PDIF I/O. It also has MIDI I/O. I think you can pick one up for about $175.

Yeah... $279 is what I've been seeing too. It just dawned on me that the $249 could have been a keying error on the number pad

Take a look at the Terratec DMX6fire, 24/96 recording, both
types of digital ins & outs. Line, tape ins & outs +mike in. also
midi in & outs.
Depends on what you want soundcard to do but Terratec is
