That makes sense regarding Peter Gabriel. I've been listening to his greatest hits in my car and it has amazing depth and clarity but the sound is very fatigueing after awhile.

Absolutely - exclusively SSL sound Exellent but with a weird character. You just put your finger on why I refused to work on them, they made me think something was not quite right with my mixes, and they made me tired.
Of cause, you can do something about it - get a set of Genelec monitors and you'll mask it pretty well.

Sonus, good point, but I think we should leave Behhhh out of this discussion, they are firmly in their own league.

Note: I said trying........ Unfortunately I was not always successful, and I had to suffer.
Ever done a project on a 9098 Shailat?

Projects? Well 1 jazzcombo.

I've been doing MY projects on a D16.....

a $1.100 Korg D16 that is.... :D :D ;) :p :p

What about those Midas Venice consoles? They look like a trailorpark-christmastree, but I hear they sound very decent for the money...

No, but I have worked on the AMEK 2025 (if I am remembering the correct model #) and Amek Angela.

Isnt the 9098 the newest model? It looks like a beauty...forget chicks.....I'd marry that board.

Midas venice is a live sound console

But with its direct outs it could make a nice studio combo with a Mackie HDR 24/96, right?
Or should I consider a Soundcraft Ghost instead?

I have never had the chance to listen to a Venice I'm afraid, but I have used their heritage 3000 on a couple of tours, which is very nice, even tough I personally prefer the AMEK Recall
Midas stuff is good, sounds good, has brilliant pres and EQ.
All I can tell you is that their live consoles are a firm step above the quality of anything Soundcraft makes. (and, of cause, more expensive)

Of cause. at the moment, there are a LOT of really good consoles for sale second hand, which, if you know a bit about analogue gear, are really worthwhile. I just looked at one for a friend, a Trident 24 28x24x24 with a full patchbay, one owner, absolutely immaculate. From a "hobby" studio, hardly used but maintained on a contract with one of the top techs in CA. We managed to buy it for my friend for $9.500, and the owner threw in 2 sets of good monitors as well. This is a world-class console, with automation!
Another person I know bought a Rembrand, also complete with bays, for under $6.000

SJoko

thanx for the info, but I was more looking at a 24 channel analogue desk for around $4000-6000... Hypothetically, as I only have a bedroomstudio now around my Korg D16.

Any suggestions on decent not to expensive consoles?

Aces 34x16 in-line, good condition, Vu meters, patch bay, manual 1 $3,800
Allen & Heath Saber Plus 32x16x2 with mute automation 1 $7,200
Amek BC II 16x4x2 1 $3,000
Amek TAC Scorpion I 32x8x2 with patchbay and custom oak stand 1 $3,200
DDA CS3 40x4, 4 stereo in, 6 aux, 5 band eq, less than 3 yrs old 1 $6,800
Dynamix 3000 24x8x8, +4/-10 - (English) 4 band eq w/mid sweeps 1 $3,950
Harrison 3624 36 frame, 32x24, just rechipped & recapped 4 yrs ago 1 $6,500
SoundWorkshop Series 30 28x8x24, with patch 1 $3,500
Trident Aries 24x8x16 $5000

That's just a quick collection I pulled from some good second hand gear people.
In other words - its up to people to decide what they want - if you want a new, guaranteed piece of gear, buy that. If you are serious about recording and want real fun and real quality, there are so many REAL options. Just look - a Harrison 32x24 for 6,5k or a what? a soundcraft or mackie? ouch!!!
