this is supposed to the place to ask stupid questions, right?

well, i've got lots of 'em. but - this is my first:

what is phantom power & how does it work?

thanks

It is a voltage (usually 48) supplied by many pre-amps for the use of condenser mics.

thanks for that site, it was real good info.

now, i'm gonna go for the big kahuna and sound REALLY stupid...

i still don't get, physically, what it is... is it a kind of chord, rather than an xlr? or is it a unit that the xlr chord plugs into before going to my board? i told you it would be a stupid question. but, that was the one thing i didn't get from the article.

would this be a good time to point out that i don't yet own a condensor mic & so i'm really getting ahead of myself. well, i'm new around here and i'm trying to just ask questions while they're fresh in my mind... thanks all

ok, now i'm feeling real dumb.

i just read derek's reply - so it's fed through my xlr by a pre-amp (which i also don't yet own).

so, then - while i'm here - will a pre-amp also effect the sound i get out of my dynamic mics? is it doing anything other than signal boost for a dynamic?

most mixers allow u to switch to +48V for all XLR inputs

dynamic mics wont be affected by phantom power, at all. only ribbon mics should not be connected to a phantom powered output, it could destroy them (so i have heard).

its good to ask before, rather then buying a mic and ruining it due to inproper usage! ;)

but its also good to use the seach option of this board - many questions (especially "newbie" questions..) are already answered.. :)
