What do you want to record, and what is your budget?

You can get a 25 dollar mic. You could get a ten thousand dollar mic. Help us out here.

If it wasnt for the shapes...both capsules would be identical

That's what king is saying, they ARE identical except for the tops. I heard Shure came out and said so outright, but I can't find where..

It was good enough Robert Plant.

Nevertheless, the mic is weak for vocals. I can think of several better dynamics and a metric assload of better condensers.

SM57 for vocals = teh suck

*edit - it is remotely possible that your voice is so shrill that the SM57 would be a good vocal mic. I doubt it.

isnt a sm58 just an sm57 with a different grill that has a windscreen underneath it?

The tops make them sound different. SM58 is a little more wooly than the SM57. Neither are ideal vocal microphones.

What kind of music ETC ETC Use the search button near the top and look around. This topic comes up quite a bit. Good hunting.

I'd say the opposite - The 57 would be more "wooly" than the 58.

As far as neither being ideal vocal microphones... There are an awful lot of people who would defend their 58's to the death. A 58 into a decent preamp can make quite the powerful combination...

Ill kill the motherfucker that disses the SM58...lol.

Nah...they are OK and something that is allways in the cabinet if nothing else works...I have several handheld dynamics Id go to first though.

But Id reccomend it anybody new to this to use one of these untill they have arround $500 to spend on a decent LDC.

and the tops affect the cardioid pattern, no? the 58's sweet spot is a little wider and picks up more peripheral sound?
feel free to dispel if i am completely misinformed.
