What is a "broken" sound? please help!

how could you possibly get that from what I said?
I said specifically that it IS NOT A DESCRIPTION OF SOUND!!!!
Good lord man ......... it means the mic sounds like it's broken ....... it's not referring to sound in a descriptive way.
 
I have heard the term in context of things that are overused. I had a chess player call me on my predictable opening being 'broken' before. I guess that could apply to something like an 808 clap sound in old dance music or a gated reverb snare on 80s rock, or hugely chorused 'clean' guitar settings for ballads? Probably just means any sound that needs to be fixed because it doesn't work for what it was intended to accomplish.
 
Maybe someone was playing some classical and said "It sounds like Baroque".

You're reaching. We've established from context that the original post referred to by the OP meant the mic sounded as though it was broken. ;)
 
Do smashed up LPs qualify as broken sounds ?

Not as far fetched as it sounds. There's a great song by a guy called Larry Norman about a relationship in the death throes called "Baroquen spirits". It's a nice play on words.
By the way, Sting's autobiography is called "Broken music". He says that when he was trying to learn the piano, he played in such a strange way that that was how his granny described what he was doing; as broken music.
 
All mics are broken. They have limits. When you crest those limits, the mic sounds broken. Ever hear audio from a shuttle launch? It's kind of hard to tell what is clipping, what is wind noise, or what is actual noise on location.
