What in tarnation?!

okay, this is weird. Usually, I use a patch bay with my md8. It has worked fine so far.

But today, I couldnt get hardly any sound out of channels one and two (using the XLR inputs). I thought maybe I had blown the pre-amps. So I messed with it a while, and eventually got it to work again by unplugging the channel 1 and 2 1/8th" plugs that were going to the patchbay.

I couldnt believe it! How are these things even related? Why should it matter so long as nothing is plugged into channel 1 and 2 on the patchbay?

I cant figure it out. But I guess from now on I'll just leave the 1/8th" plugs unplugged.
 
Normalling connections in a PB means that there is signal flow between the top connector and the bottom connector of a patch without requiring a jumper - the "normal" state - plugging something into the patch at that point breaks the normalled connection and stops the signal flow. If your PB is normalled, then you could have inadvertently made a connection that interrupts the "normal" flow.

BUT............ I just re-read your post and it don't think it's the PB at all - on lots of semi-pro gear you can't connect both XLR and line-inputs at the same time - must have something to do with the load and the way the connectors are wired.
