What if your vocals suck

Yes my original post was to see if there's some type of technology out there to hide the fact that"I suck at singing".You guys helped me out tremendously when I had trouble recording the guitar line in the posted song,I just thought you'd be equally helpful in this.I'm just recording this for the fun and experience of it all,not to become a great singer or to put it on the internet or to sing live.I'm in a band and am quite happy just being the guitar player. So once again is there some type of technology out there to help me with recording my shitty singing?:)

Re-record your vocal, really belt it out emotionally, get the timing and feel right. Upload the dry unprocessed vocal take to megaupload or some other file host then post the link in here or msg me. I will try to tune it to the best of my ability when I am able. :)

Ya but what if you do have a plastic nose, you are on Prozac and you are beating the shit out of someone in the schoolyard and still...

YOUR VOCALS SUCK!!!

WHAT THEN???

Look Up TC Helicon God Damn it!!!! stop argueing like retards on the internet and help the fella fuck sakes hahaha

Hard to have problems when you just don't care. Lou Reed knows he's terrible. The dude went into The Velvet Underground with the sole purpose of annoying people. (watch his interviews from that time period) I don't think he thought he'd be famous because of it.

Since you're doing this for yourself, you should try practicing for yourself, too. If you spent a quarter of the time practicing vocals as you have playing guitar (which you're quite good at) I feel you could be a very passable singer. (probably relegated to backup, but still passable) AND THEN as time progresses and you get better, you could do what Daran Malakian (guitarist and second main vocalist of System of a Down) has done and basically become the second vocalist for a band and almost force the main vocalist into the background. (a la Mesmorize/Hypnotize) I know you want a quick and easy fix, and Autotune can help (contrary to popular belief Autotune CAN be damn near invisible, provided the vocalist is able to hit just about on pitch {the T-Pain effect is just a side effect of breaking the plugin and using it how it was not intended to be used})

Just remember to keep practicing your voice, and I'd learn to sing while playing, too. You could really increase your usefulness as a musician to a band being able to do two things at once and do them well. But, as always, it takes practice.

Good luck!

I volinteer teaching guitar to kids at a place called Harmony maybe I can hit up the vocal teacher for some lessons

I have a couple of old technologies that "might" help you out on the vocal dept.

A piano or a guitar. Find your vocal range using either of these instruments. The particular song you wrote may be to low or too high for your god given vocal chords.

Start with the lowest note and work your way up. First use humming then some syllables. Your ideal vocal range should be where you can match the notes of the instruments with ease. Chances are you may have to transpose the keys to your song to match your vocal range.

Performance is probably another subject. Even when you're within your vocal range, your performance might still get you off key at times so practice. If you're going to rely on auto tune at least the corrections will be minor because you're already in your vocal comfort zone... meaning, you're not TRYING HARD to hit the notes.

I'm recording a song but I suck at singing are there any tips I could use to make my vocal recordings sound better?I'm using a zenniheiser e609 mic >line 6 UX2 interface>pod farm>reaper.I'm just doing it for myself(wouldn't condem anyone else)but I would like to sound as good as I can with what i've got.

Then who cares if you suck, you're the only one hearing you! Moreover, why the hell would you even go through the trouble of recording if nobody is going to hear it but yourself... why record it when you can just play it any time in your head?

Hi Dad,

Glen ........ your finding all of your illegitimate children here on HR!

And this one looks promising!
I would suggest a few trips to the wood shed and he'll develop some manners.

My vocals aren't that great either. What i do it do the track... no matter how many takes it requires... you can always blend a crap ton of tracks into one workable one. Then I duplicate it. I pan one track to one side, ant the othe to the other side. Then I start one track a couple/few milliseconds befor the other which gives it a little bit of a fatter tone. Then I add a little reverb. This usually does the trick for me.

Once one has gotten over the thrill of actually recording something that maybe one has written, the essential question remains ~ are you willing to listen, for the rest of your life, to something that you know to be shit ? When you're 69 or 72 will you be happy to listen to out of tune substandard vocals ? Far better to work on that voice. Yes, Britney and her ilk may well use all kind of enhancement on their vocals. But while their stuff may not be to everyone's choosing, they can at least sing. A bit. Passably.

Practice, Walshinator ! Practice ! And you shall go to the ball.

I suck at violin. A consideration I factored into the decision of whether or not to record some violin tracks. The resultant decision was a resounding "no".

I came across some really old stuff 35+ years old that was done on 8 track reel to reel and I gotta say ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... My vocals sucked then too! everyone who hears them self singing on a recording always say, that's not me!!!!!

Walshinator, you haven't posted here in 5 days so you may no longer care but if you do I thought I might try to give some ideas to a fellow Canuck.

- You can't sing but how's your voice? You could talk it out like Willie Shatner or John McCrae (of Cake). It can come off "shmarmy" but I've some very cool tracks by guys who don't try to do what they can't.

- What about sampling? I had to face the same dilemma as you but I actually would like to be heard someday, so I sample voice clips. Not the same as lyrics but it can sound good.

- Neil Young? Off key can be a style if you do it right. Maybe throw a vintage gramaphone VST effect to give it some colour. Radiohead has made an uncomfortable voice into a genre. The main thing is let your voice sound "off", don't fight it.

I don't know if any of these will suit your style but I've gotten so much help from these boards over the last three months I thought it would be nice to try to help someone else.

Cheers.
