What I need

Pick up a real bass. Emulated bass sounds by way of a keyboard sound crappy. I got an Epiphone Thunderbird for $300 and it's great. You can pickup basses for even less than that.

Mics are not absolutely necessary. For vocals yes. But if you picked up a POD you would not need to mic an amp. Getting a good miced amp tone is more of a hassle, since there are more factors involved. Both Line 6 and Behringer make POD devices that have both guitar and bass emulations in them.

Ok. Does that mean I need to get a bass amp? Special speakers, anything?

Farno...I would never go with workstations. They limit you to sounds in the board and what's inside the expansion packs. A midi controller is potentially endless as long as you have soundfonts for them (in the software youre using with it).

Also there is a way to rip sounds off of the expensive workstations in soundfont format. I did that and added it to my hard drive and just added to my little $100 midi keyboard and Reason 4.0.

And I can still keep on doin it and adding to my arsenal.

I'm actually going to argue against the idea of never using workstations. I use several different workstations for my music, and I prefer them to the software route when it comes to sequencing. Also, another thing to think about with workstations is that you're never limited to the sounds within the workstation, as you can always midi out to other instruments, (including software,) via midi.

Really, when it comes down to it, it's a matter of taste when it comes to using a hardware sequencer vs a software one.

I would suggest trying out a few different workstations in a store first as well as looking through the manuals to see if they work for you. Compare their set-ups to software samplers as well to see which one looks like it will work out easiest for you and go from there. :)

you could either play bass on a MIDI keyboard or record guitar and edit it so its an octave down

HERE HERE, buy a bass, even the best bass emulators sound like crap, but don't buy anything behringer makes, buy a POD and get the bass software for it, saves you money and you can record anytime day or night!

I had this same issue years ago. Let me save you alot of time and money. Buy a decent inexpensive bass guitar and this -> TECH21 SANS AMP this is THE DI box to have for bass. You will love yourself for it. ALL YOU NEED TO RECORD BASS IS A DIRECT BOX AND A BASS. SERIOUSLY THE TECH21SANS AMP WILL MAKE YOU SMILE.

Yeah, that looks real nice but one thing, do I need anything else?

I'll do a little diagram:

bass guitar-->bassdriver-->osio driver-->computer-->speakers

Do I need to worry about anything with the speakers? I heard something about using a bass will blow out your speakers. I don't know if that was true.

What is the output type?

Wait, what if I get Guitar Rig 3 and a cheap bass and use that for effects.

Ok, this is a pretty old topic but here's the current plan:

Bass Guitar
EZDrummer

I'm debating on a SM57. I'll get one in the future.
