Maybe its broken.

Broken? I don't think so. I think you just need to hit it harder.

hahahaha..........brilliant lol

on a serious note, try using different mic cables. If that doesn't work, tell the good people what your signal chain is. my guess is that its not the mic but something else in your chain. Make sure you have your gain set high enough on your pre and that nothing in your chain is muted.

It's a pretty simple mic--screw it open and check for a broken wire, bad solder joint, continuity if you have a tester.

It probably IS broken. Not really such a "far-out" or "wacky" idea is it? I've had countless Sm-57s go bad on me. I switched from Shure to Studio Projects, and now everything lasts.

Do you work for Studio Projects? Are you paid to plug them in every post you make - or do you just shamelessly promote them out of love?
just curious.....

Try Estwing; they're cheaper now that they're all made in China and the handle cushioning will still pad about -10 dB on a 16 p spike. And phantom power doesn't usually hurt them, until you get up past 16KV, in which case that will be the least of your worries.

I checked with a psychiatrist and he said your mic is likely to be having an identity crisis!!! It probably thinks it's a watch and by not working it is trying to tell you something, "It's time to get a new mic."

Plug in a different mic to the same cable. If it works, it's broke.

Pete, if you pulled that SM57 out of your ass, it might work a little better.

I find it very hard to believe that the pete, tryptophan, and the like aren't just alter egos a HR veteran made up for just for kicks.

I know, it just seems too obvious, doesn't it?

On the other hand, one of the motorcycling boards that I used to frequent attracted the attention of a (as I later found out) well-known troll, and he was a very determined pest. Took a while to run him off.
