What have I done?

I have been working on mixes for a few days and most mixes are fine, but on one or two sessions I am now getting terrible distortion - it appears as if the entire mix is limited to a specific volume... say I put the master volume at -6dB... the mix won't go above -6dB, it will just distort the tracks instead. Is there any way to fix this and go back other than reimporting the audio files into a new session and reapply all the effects? This is incredibly frustrating as I'm sure there's a simple fix since every other session is working fine.

Ok - I've narrowed the problem down even more. The issue only occurs in multitrack view (I'm using Audition 1.5) when I lock the tracks. Unlocked it sounds fine... any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hear what you are saying but locking a track literally changes a zero to a one in the ses file and in no way can I see that it can possibly affect the audio.

I think a bit more info regarding your setup, eg soundcard etc, may help
