I have always loved CADs mics, and I rarely see them mentioned here. The E100 is such a great workhorse, and I have also been impressed w/ the few others I have fooled w/.

Did they go out of vogue or are people just quiet about em. Anyone here have any experience w/ these?

well....teach me Obi Wan. i see cad mics around but i dont see much on them in here so i kinda write them off. what good CAD mics for what uses do you suggest....lets set the price limit at $300.

Like I said, the only one I have experience with is the E100. It works great as an overhead mic for drums..........can handle alot of signal w/out breaking up but still sounds nice on Vox and quiet acousitcs. Slightly hyped midrange which works well on my voice.............and best of all Its cool rectangular shape makes it stand out in the stylie dept.

Not trying to make a judgement call or scream YEAH CAD!!!........ "they sound just like a Neuman". Just wondering why they seemed to fly below the radar here.

Maybe someone w/ experience w/ more of their line can let us know more.

The CAD VSM is an outstanding mic and can be had at AMS for $479.00.

CAD was bought up by or merged with Omnitronics. I beleive it is now a division. CAD discontinued the VX2 and VSM, two very very nice mics (I have a VX2 - it's not going anywhere). The M9 and M179 get consistent "thumbs up" from users. Dunno much about the Equitech series.

I've actually considered attempting to get a job at CAD. I grew up 15 minutes from Conneaut. My wife is from there, and her grandmother retired from Astatic/CAD. Their corporate HQ is in Mentor, OH, which is about 20 minutes east of downtown Cleveland, and we want to move back to the Cleveland area eventually.

I've never used a CAD mic though.

Are they still made in USA? Or did they get the yellow fever once they were bought up?

yeah but imagine the discount if they offered it.

I think some of the cheaper ones are made somewhere in Asia now, but they do still have a manufacturing facility in Conneaut as far as I know.

Warhead, who pimps at Front End Audio, loves the CAD mics.

It's a shame that quality mics by CAD, Shure, AT, EV and a few other companies can't get the viral marketing hype that a couple of brands seem to get over and over again.

"Yellow fever" might be a bit rude to some of our asian friends on the boards don't ya think?

The capsules in the M179 are made in China I know, but the mic is assembled in the USA. I'm assuming this is still the practice at CAD concerning that mic. The M9 is assembled in the US as well with I believe a Chinese made capsule.

Like so many items, many of the parts are sourced from China.

The VX2 is my go to mic in the studio, it's got color that is so rock n' roll it ain't funny...but sounds amazing on anything I point it at. The VSM has the 1.1" capsule the VX2 used but it is being discontinued. The M9 is a great tube mic, nice flavor to have around and pretty "tube-y" sounding. Great for cab work, some vocals etc.

I've used that E100-2 (squared) mic and it is indeed a useful electret condensor. Acoustic guitar etc. but maybe not a go to vocal mic.

Their kick mic sucks in my opinion, I only tried it once but man I hated it. Big hyped low end...just what you DON'T need in most mixes!

CAD does indeed make good mics, but they don't seem to market as well as many of the big boys do.

I use my VX2 as a third (center) channel, along with a pair of SDs, to record solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar and classical guitar. Hardly rock n' roll by any stretch. Guess it shows how versitile the VX2 is, or how much I don't know what I'm doing.

My apologies to any offended parties!

sdelsolray and I follow each other around the internet bragging about our VX2! There's not many of us out here apparently but we know it's a sleeper.

When I say "rock n' roll" I mean it's got attitude. It's certainly a colored mic but the color seems to fit....everything! There is something aggressive and more real than "real" about the VX2. Sheen yet clarity...hard to put into words but you and I know what I mean.

War :)

I have an E300 that I will never part with. I almost snagged a second one on eBay recently, but I alas it was not to be. I've been thinking of getting the M179 now that my one-year self-imposed ban on buying mics has expired. The really low end CAD's are not even in consideration.

The color does not get in the way, it seems to morph and adapt to the source, giving it a pleasing excitement, without overdoing it at all. I've been using the Optema 110 capsule more recently, and I'm beginning to appreciate it more now. It is quite different from the Optema 125 capsule, yet still a sibling.

Did you do that cold turkey or did you have some help with that?

The E-100 has always been my favorite kick mic. I haven't tried the E-100^2, but I'm hopeful.

I'm never parting with my M179s. Nope, nope, no can do.
