Thea said:What do you think about the whole second internal ATA drive? It might be a cheaper option, temporarily at least? I will need to back up eventually and I also want to be organized about it. Would you happen to know where one might get a glyph drive for cheaper, somewhere online? Also, do you know anything about the pre-amp, grace 101? Thanks, again.
Try a Froogle search. I can't think of anywhere in particular that has a great deal on the Glyph. Another internal drive? Sure, why not! If you need more space or you need to preserve your firewire connections for something else, internal is helpful. But, again, your current setup will also work in the short term. As far as backup goes, my personal inclination is to backup on some type of media or drive that can be separated from your computer. If something terrible happens to your new G5, where do you want your Logic files and audio data to reside? On the computer as it heads back to the Apple Store or an authorized reapair shop? Or Sitting safely on DVD or an external drive that never leaves home? (My college educated daughter lost all her digital photos and itunes downloads after her ibook logic board died. She got the blue screen of death, sent the machine back, and, viola, three days later a repaired machine arrives with a new drive and logic board but nothing else.)
The Grace 101 has a good rep here and elsewhere. It offers a clean sound that many find appealing for certain applications. It has one channel and goes for about $500-600. But there are a lot of other preamps out there, so you might want to do some research before buying. I can recommend the Great River preamps that I use but YMMV. You may also want a preamp with two channels, particularly if you want to mic an instrument with two mics.
