Wuts tha deal yall. Im new 2 tha site but not 2 tha rap game. Ive been rapping sense i was 11 and im 18 now and im just now putting a studio together. I have all this shit.

  • TASCAM 2488 24-track digital recorder
  • Sennheiser HD-280 Pro closed-back headphones
  • MXL 992 large-diaphragm condenser mic with case
  • 2 Nady CM 90 cardioid condenser mics
  • BBE 362 Sonic Maximizer signal processor
  • one pair Fostex PM-1 monitors
  • 3 On-Stage tripod stands with booms
  • 4 Lo-Z 20' mic cables
  • 4 LiveWire 10' instrument cables
  • 2 Telex 48X 50-CDR spindles
  • pop filter

i dont kno wut some of its for yet, lo'l but ill learn soon i guess. but does any body know of anything else i need.

Well i got a list of things that i would need for a beginners studio and i bought it. And i shoudnt have said dont know wut its for, i really mean dont know how to use it. My bad.

i would say... if you dont know how to use it, then why hasve it? why dont you buy things as you need them

because i saved up money to buy every thing i need now. i dont fill like waiting to get shit. And even if i buy it later im still not gonna know off the top how to use it. I didnt know how to make beats till i got a keyboard. So do u know of anything else i need or r u gonna keep complaining about how i spend my money?

sounds like you've got everything you need to make rap records. do you intend to have other sounds besides keyboard, vocals, and drums? Like you did with your keyboard, just hook it all up and get busy learning how to use your gear.

It's going to seem like everyone's jumping all over you for being a newb, but seriously I'm just trying to help. Just buying stuff off a list is not a good idea. A lot of the stuff on the list IMO is not that great for the value, or in the case of the sonic maximizer completely useless. You bought instrument cables, but you probably don't need them (do you play guitar/bass?), you need balanced TRS patch cables to hook up all your line level signals. You can probably do better than the fostex monitors for the money, same with the Nady mics.
If you can return some of this stuff, I highly recommend doing it. Then take your time researching and figuring out what you really need and WHY, then research everything on your list and find the most appropriate brand/model for YOUR needs/budget. I know you probably want to jump right in and start recording and that's cool too, but music shop guys lick their chops when people come in with a fat paycheck and just want to pick up whatever so they can start making music right away. Trust me, we've all been there and wasted some (a lot of) money doing that.

Holy Crap!! I figured here in the newbies forum people would be more laid back, expecting newbie questions. But it's quite the opposite. How sad.

lil_lo. Don't feel too bad. I think they are being this way because people often ask questions here in these forums without looking to see if their questions have already been answered, and maybe some of them feel your question has already been answered a bazillion times. (It gets kind of tedious answering the same questions over and over again)

I agree with Mike. You got plenty of gear to make tracks. Have you hooked it up and messed around with any of it yet? Have you ever done any recording at all? like even just on a regular tape deck, or 4-track?

This isn't for people to relax its for noobs to be set straight. If you're buying shit and you dont know how to use it then there isn't much sense in having it. This guy probably wasted a couple hundred precious dollars on some shit because a list told him to buy it. People are getting onto him because he's blindly buying stuff. The only thing you should buy then learn is an instrument, when it comes to pro audio equipment, learn then buy. I spent the better part of 6 months deciding on what program, what mic, what pre's, how each of the components worked and how they worked with each other. I also called companies to check compatability with my set up. I researched the differences between firewire and usb, researched whether or not I wanted/needed a control surface and even down to what each cable did. Yes you can just jump in and buy a bunch of stuff and get some things done, but you'll waste a lot of money and time by not researching first.

How'd you learn to use equipment you didn't have? Anyone can read a manual, but that only gets you so far. I know for me, manuals are often useless. When I have a problem, it is almost NEVER something mentioned in the manual, and even the support people literally almost NEVER have a clue. The wiring diagrams included in many manuals rarely show a diagram that fits with my setup, and I have to figure a way that works for me.

I bought my first 4-track before I knew how to use one. There's not much to it, but I mean I didn't know exactly what to do to get started. I recently bought a Lexicon MX200, and while I know how to use an effects processor, I didn't know how to use this one exactly. After I bought it, I learned. My point is that people are ALWAYS buying something before they know how to use it. It's not wrong, or even uncommon.

You're getting into specifics and stuff that is arguable and subjective at best, such as which monitors are better for the money, blah blah blah. the important thing for a beginner is to get some usable equipment and get to it....which is what lil_lo has done. Could he have gotten better deals on possibly better equipment? MAYBE. But if he's busy "researching" this and that, he's probably not busy recording. Besides, it sounds like he obviously did some research or he wouldn't have a list to get started with in the first place.

Frankly, if you are so pissed about someone who is obviously a complete noob, I don't know why you would even be reading the newbies forum. :D

As far as not being a place to relax, why not? It's not like careers or lives are being made and destroyed in this particular forum. Most of these guys probably won't even be into recodring music 20 years from now. So what's the big deal?

I got onto recording forums and read, thats how I learned how to use stuff I didn't own. I wasn't refering to reading the manuals, there's a whole other world of info beyond manuals. Also I never said I was pissed, its just dumb to buy a bunch of stuff you may not use, like the sonic maximizer, and sdc's, he's doing vocals for hip hop, why does he need one sdc let alone two. What instruments is he using the cables for. And I understand you buying stuff before you know how to use it, but do you buy things that you have no idea what its for? Its one thing to have a small studio or know something about recording and buying stuff you aren't sure how to use, its another to have no knowledge about studios and go out and buy stuff. He does seem like he somewhats know what to get and yeah most of us were a little too harsh but I have a feeling you'll get a lot of how do i connect this? whats a mixer? explain flying faders? and an assload more questions that have already been answered a million times. but all that aside its awesome you're gettin started man congrats and hope we can hear some stuff from you soon.
