What else do I need, and what cost

Hey all,

I'm buying a Roland or Boss 8 track and need to know what else i need and the best pieces for the least price.

I'm sure i need 2 mics is there anything else i need?

Cables, stands, headphones, monitors, amplifier...
Rack effects, DI boxes, headphone amp...
Mixdown unit, DAT machine, Acoustic treatment...

More headphones, more mics, better monitors, better recorders...

Better mics, better mic pres, more - bigger - better rack effects...

Cost? Well... start at around $10K and the sky's the limit!

What kind of music are you creating?

How do you want to apply this equipment (in terms of production)?

How much money do you have/want to spend?

bawlls, you may also want to use the search function at this bbs
as you will find extensive information, especially as your needs
become more specific. If it's any help-remember the adage
"buy cheap buy twice" in terms of the quality of your gear,
not necessarily price.

P.S. Bruce, I'm curious as to your thoughts on home vs. pro
recording as you have a studio, have you seen that
thread yet? Rather than derailing this one, you're all
welcome to post your 2 cents there!
 
Hey again,

I'll be recording pretty basic tracks, myself playing slide guitar, maybe one other on piano. Right now I'm just going to put some original ideas down. I won't get serious about distribution for a while so i dont think i'll need high end stuff or all the extras like effects racks and stuff (unless you think otherwise).
This is what I think I need

external cd writer to plug in to the machine
Mics 2
drum machine
Roland or Boss digital recorder

I don't have anything right now so i'm looking to setup a basic system, nothing fancy.

sorry one more thing... Cost should be low, I'm thinking without tax 700 Multitrack + 200 Mics + 300 Drum Machine (If Necessary)

about 1000-1200 to start

I would drop the drum machine and get a TASCAM 788 with 2 mics - AKG1000 and sm57. Comes to $1200 and you can save for the drum machine in the event that you live in a drummerless town.
