what do you track on your 2488, vocals? instruments?

BMWerks Can you burn one CD with some songs from partition #1 and some from partition #2 said:
sure, the only thing is.. you have to push a few buttons more.

Menu>DISC>SELECT..there you have the 3 partitions.

each operates like each other, from what i've seen.

so i filled up partition 1...got the notice.
then i MENU>DISC>SELECT...selected partition 2 and went to CREATE and sht just like before.

but you have to select the partition to PreMaster the song.

i gotta go do a partition in the bathroom... HAHAHAAA

Brown

"i gotta go do a partition in the bathroom... HAHAHAAA"

No! NOOO, I meant, bathroom as a "partition" in the house!! Not partition in the toilet!!HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HA!!!!!!!!YOU'RE KILLING ME!!!!!

Thanks for your kind words Cool.

I don't care what the boys at the "WEB CHARTS" lab say. I'm not going back and muddying my stuff up just so they can sound like amature, garage band recordings.

About loud playing on the uploads? Gotta go into the dynamics pages and tweak up some compression/limiter. There, at the bottom of the pages you'll find "gain" control. I use it to bring up the whole mix levels to be mastered. You have to be a little careful here because if you use too much, you'll "flatten" your dynamics. (anti-dynamic) And after you've given the mix the right amount of limiting/compression you don't bump up a little of the gain, your mix will sound too quiet. You have to adjust the gain to the amount of dynamics you use for your mix. I'm in there playing with it all the time. (the dynamics section)

Yeah man! Thanks for the partition tips. You mean that I can go from one partition to the next, collecting songs I want to burn on the CD-r? That's tits!

I never been to the dynamics page? i did notice they have a compressor...but just turned it on..thanks for the tips again.

now the partition...Disclaimer: i don't know what i'm doing really. i was stating and asking at the same time.
it works...but not sure if i'm overwriting anything? its like they split the HD into 3 sections.

unfortuantely, i haven't gotten much productive responses at the Tascam forum. There are some good threads to read, after a lenghty search,
but to date my direct questions on that forum are never answered.

maybe someone can chime in? if not maybe start another thread with a specific question pn the hard drive partitions?

2488 dynamically speaking- Another secret

wow! B..
the dynamics "gain" was really the volume knob!
the first CDR i burnt came out great volume wise.

of course tonight i was squishing everything...but the volumes there!
i went form 32 in the car deck to 24... appreciate it again.

mixing too long last couple nights and my ears went dead.
been playing with these JBL Control 5's i couldn't sell.
they sure sound different than my little BW303's. at times i like 'em, but they have alot of mid's. gave em a good testdrive. will return to the BW303's tomorrow...and will compare some mix translations..blah,blah,blah.

if it (volume) was a car ...dynamics gain was like finding the gas pedal. :) .......

and the partition stuff... someone was kind enough and told me DO NOT FILL THE HD FULL or one may have to reformat (lose everthin).

it is ok to use all 3 hard drive partitions tho...just don't fill them up fully.

my mixes still suck??? i can get about 3-4 items and it goes to mud.

3-4 items.

Cool, if you can get 3-4 items sounding clear, separate, distinctive and identifiable in your mix, then you've learned a lesson even some of the supper star engineers haven't with those 3-4 items. If you just want to use more tracks for the sake of using more tracks, it might be time to do some rethinking about what you want your band to play. Who will they be performing for? Unless it's the "gear alone" that is so intriguing and not the performance by which you use the tools to convey the art and kraft. And that would be your own subjective decision.

"I'm starting to think the worlds of digital and analog recording are more a cult phenomenon than anything else."
Reel

I couldn't have said it better. Great quote. Right on the friggin nail man. I thought that everybody reading this tread might benefit from this quote from the Reel Person, Dave-mania.

And to think, there are still people hung-up about the differences. Hey! to each, his own. Period. It's like arguing what's a better made automobile Ford or Chevy? Yeah, like I knew this guy who's, album was recorded by the "Chevy" but the A&R guy refused to sign him cuz he liked "Ford" better.

JUST GIVE ME THE RESULTS!!

Go easy on the gas pedal Cool, I just payed more for gas here at my favorite gas station than I ever have. Citgo gas, 93 octane for my Trail Blazer, $2.69 per US gallon. Cost me $46.00 to fill my tank. It's probably much higher out in CA.

Gas-
damn $46 thats a SPB1 mic everytime...or a RNC compressor every 3 fillups!
or ..oh no I shudder to think... that'd be a set of BW601s3's in a month or two!!!!!
doh!

the answer is obvious!! stay home more and record!!!

B, your inputs have been totally great...the band, you see it exactly.
yeah, too much...
my youngest even said "why did you add that? you should take that out? it sounds like your trying to add too much!!"

B's Online Training:
2488 Volume before burning. DO a SHFT+DYnamics...Compressor ON..fiddle with the Gain... sweeet success!! fn touchdown!

thanks for the the volume thing, you answered the question, especially on the 2485. it was it, i can dig it. my dynamics page was found and is ON.

better than some Supper Pro's at McDonalds??
but i'm a songwriting nut by nature, i'm content with that. hell, i have to train myself not to pick up the guitar or i'll fiddle fhk my time away and won't even get the recorder turned on!! no thoughts of being an ME...just dig the sht they do.

HR recording is great ain't it? its all about getting lost in the arts... and my next one tune IS always my favorite.
the MP3 world..REEL made uploading the tunes sound like fun, so i started to dabble in that, but its always a lower priority to jamming.
REEL's got the karma for chillin' and jammin' and not being uptight about the sht.. he knows... he knows those Tascam analog knobs and MP3 can be for fun not money.
i just don't understand why REEL won't talk about his 2488 he's been recording on for the past 4 weeks?hmmm?

Sonic perfection and why?
i'm not .....
hell a friend that seriously trys to push sht, was at a big time producer's office in Nashville.. said he listens to most tunes/songs in a crappy cd player sitting on his desk! so much for sonic bliss??
this is 2nd hand words, not 3rd or 4th, not an article.
a crappy cd player in a pro' producers office!!
for songwriters in a bedroom studio this should be encouraging. he didn't bite, but said bring some more. he didn't state anythin' about analog or digital.

why are we here?
i loved a mccartney interview...the guy asked "why don't you retire?"
the cute one said "if i retired, the first thing i'd probably do is sit down on the couch and strum my guitar and write a song..." or some sht, you get it.

now thats a gas. :)

Had gas.

It's ironic. I know a doctor that works at my hospital. He rides his $1,995.00 Honda scooter to work on his $175,000.00 per year salary. :(

Hey Cool. For whatever it's worth to you, you could write. How young is your youngest may I ask? One of those gifted listeners I'm sure. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Does it.

Who makes these monitors, BW601s3's? I'm kind-of looking to replace my old JBL 4408's.

"HR recording is great ain't it?" Yep.

"said he listens to most tunes/songs in a crappy cd player sitting on his desk! so much for sonic bliss??"Because he's listening for "the song" not the recording. Hell when the act gets signed, they'll organize and record the song or album the way they want with technology you and me couldn't afford. Like, 128 bit resolution digital sampling. We may think we have some very state-of-the-art tools and gear but, the big record companies have access to the next generation of technology.

Reel has a 2488? Wow.

"B, your inputs have been totally great...the band, you see it exactly.
yeah, too much..."
Hope yur passing these things on. These things were passed on to me to share with others. I can't make any freakin money at it though. fck. Rather make a friend than a buck. Doh! :p

About the "cute one" (great story) and what he said he'd do when he retired. I was sitting down have lunch at the dinner yesterday talking to this old house painter. We were talking about winning the lottery. He asked me what I would do if I won and of course I went on and on about buying a big boat, a beautiful new home, traveling, driving a Bentley, etc.etc... When I asked him, he said; "I'll just go buy a new aluminium ladder, a new work van and a few extra brushes".

Posted a couple new tunes on the WEB CHARTS. You might like these. Check'm out.

Later dude :D

B&W is the company. 601,602 etc... are models. A few pro's around here recommend them and use them. MAssive Master uses the 802's for mastering.
but to your question...BW601, 602's...their one of the hundreds of recommended speakers. Abbey Road has a few BW..i think an English company.

The Wharfs, Yorks, so highly rep'd....no one carries them around here.
Leaving the Guitar Center standards which have a mainly Actives line up...

i purchased the BW303 set, lowest line and really liked them. SOS (sound on sound) article tested them out with decent results. HiFI vs Studio Monitor.
The build quality is great, materials, allen head bolts, very pleased.
$150 pair used off ebay ($350 new).... yes, this was not a logical thing to do...but i got lucky this once and they arrived in mint condition.

Either way...I'm more interested in your opinion?
you have the JBL 4408's so thats possibly already past the 601 level, Guitar Center stages of Ear maturity.

I've been spending the last week making pvc speaker stands and comparing mixes ( alittle re-tracking)...but mixing wars... BW303 vs JBL Control 5 plus....

today will be the final burn. The Control 5's have a pronounced upper mids (which some may like)..but light on bass...
so MY MIXES have tended to be bass heavy using the JBL controls, however the vocals can tend to be better...

the BW303 have the best mix imo...apparently more balanced IMO..or too MY EARS.
What are the BEST Nearfields you've ever used or heard in a studio??

as is my history, i only need one good set. i love to tesdrive...but the loser gets sold...ebay whatever.

i tried selling the Controls once...$225pair...then at $125pair!! they are used but work perfect. Anyway, I'll be keeping one set.

The 601/602 seems to have the same sound I like from 303...but a little more. and alittle more money.

Monitoring for sound.

I don't know. I guess I really don't need 8" woofers anymore. Maybe a pair of 5&1/2"ers or 6's (6 inch woofer 1" tweeter-two way system) will do OK. My listening space is only 14'X22' and I have to have these 4408's up on pedistals, they take up so much space. 6"ers can sit comfortably on my counter W/the 2487, the computer&monitor, printer and all the rest of the CDs, DATs, sequencer, voice mods. and lamps & little stuff like that there.

I'll send a photo of the lab. (I've been calling my studio a lab lately because so many bizzar [musical] experiments have been going down here.)

Bowers and Wilkins speakers. Check out this link. :D

yeah, Actives ..there are some KRK V4's for sale for $250 pair...i've heard nothign but good about these... powered too!

i've been lucky with used equipment... usually 50% off! but the risk?

Buying Monitors...
i liked one gearhead... he just stated he was "sick of looking at his old ones" and wanted new ones...still makes me chuckle...

i can understand the space and sht issue... i could have had some RP8's for like $275!! but they were just too fkn big, man... honestly the air in the fkn port blew in my face soo much.... i was like FHK THIS SHT!!

there's really soo many brands, shapes and sizes....

think about the floor space savings....2487 and a pair of powered little KRK's!

if everything keeps shrinking at this rate we'll be too big for our chairs!

"if everything keeps shrinking at this rate we'll be too big for our chairs!"

already 20lbs. OW.

"yeah, Actives ..there are some KRK V4's for sale for $250 pair...i've heard nothign but good about these... powered too!"

These aren't the ones with the 4 1/4" woofers are they? He he.

It took me 15 years to get sick of looking at mine. They just aren't keeping up sonicly with the kinds of frequency signals the rest of my digital tools put out... I'm getting better mixes working with my AKG K-240 Studio cans. Though I like them a lot for playbacks, late night listening and quick checks, they can get a little tiresome after about 5 or 6 hours at the 2487.

Hopefully, the next pair of monitors I get will last half as long.
Think I'm sold on the B&Ws Cool. Thanks.

yeah..the 4", but they get alot of good press... i was initially laughing at them too, but then with a sub they get very high praise...go figure?
a shootout with Yamha and Blue Sky (with subs)
in E-Magazine left these little 4"ers at Top Pick too.

i just completed my JBL control 5 plus...versus the BW303 mix-out test.

the mix on my 303's just came out much better for me. the translation from my 303/HR room to the outside world (my cardeck and computer/stereo)..
was much more similar than with the Control 5's.

better yet..still excited about the Dynamics tip.
yeah, the volume was soooo sweeet...mixes are now around 24 on my cardeck (like consumer stuff) instead of having to max it out at 33....
thanks to your help i'm getting there! no expert, but the new tricks are great.

2488- Under the hood:
had a 2488 incident Sunday. Accidently bumped the freakin CD tray and it quite going in & out!!
Had to take the whole damn thing apart and put the plastic tray back on the plastic pin...whooo...close call.

noted a Seagate 40Gig Barracuda Harddrive.
I wanted to see what chips were used for the Preamp's but quite while I was ahead once the CD tray started sliding in/out again.

looks like one could switch the HD and CDR quite easily...2 conectors and about 10 screws....

"I wanted to see what chips were used"

I like the corn chips myself. (lightly salted)

"yeah..the 4", but they get alot of good press... i was initially laughing at them too, but then with a sub they get very high praise...go figure?"

Satalites and a sub. Think of all the realestate I'll be gaining.

I think the sub for home theater should be bigger than what I need it for here at the 2487. I think I bought the last pair of good JBL monitors back in 1990. I haven't heard a pair of reference speakers from JBL as accurate since.

B&W wants $11,000.00 for a pair of 800 series

"noted a Seagate 40Gig Barracuda Harddrive." The best!....... Right?

Yeah! Right... I'm going to change a hard drive. Don't bet on it!

Are you buying the B&W 303's? Let me know how you like working with them.

I bought the BW303's- passive, sometime ago.
I went for the Entry level- good cheap sht category. I don't have Yorks (1st choice) or Passive Wharfedales (2nd ~$189 pair) around here to listen to.

so BW DM303. (600's were too expensive at the time...buy cheap buy twice?).

I got a used set $150 pair and love 'em.
I like them very much, and have no reason to upgrade other than gearhead fever and i think the 601's or 2's would be a step up maybe a little better detail....

aha! a Testdrive and comparison will prove that out.

you may find out you think they suck? its all personal eardrum decisions.
make sure you can return them. thats the internet thing...you can lose $40 sending them back!!

2488 Harddrive???
the barracuda?...i'm not a computer geek..i don't know whats good or bad.
but i can unplug and plug back in....its the ext. software, bootdisks that fk me up.

Coming Soon-----------------------------------------
I do know MrRock is sending me the CD to upgrade to 1.02.
Then I'm sending it to you and it WILL work!!!

better faders fading, no clicking at the end... takes 3-5minutes.

:)  :p

Saved the monitor link, have to AB them, Wow, we're up to 4 pages now Cool.

"Coming Soon-----------------------------------------
Thanks Cool!
Price seems too good to be true.
:o

"I do know MrRock is sending me the CD to upgrade to 1.02." I think my problem was somewhere in the down loading process from the web to my PC. Even though I saw the digital imprint on the CD, my 2487 wouldn't accept it, got some dumb error messages etc.. Tried several times. I know it's not rocket science, my unit just wouldn't accept the data.

Then I'm sending it to you and it WILL work!!! "

better faders fading, no clicking at the end... takes 3-5minutes.
This would be so great! :D

well, my bet is MrRocks CD will work. It has already been proven to work in his unit.

like many things with this software, it requires all the extensions and data files and root directorys to be correct. i didn't get it either! :p

once mine is upgraded tho, i plan to send MrRock the same thing I'd paid for it.
$20 or so.
I don't have the clicking noise, but i have heard the faders at the low side abruptly stop...this has been fixed in 1.02.

i seriously tried the download sht too, but i think you have to have a "special" CD-Burner setup with also Roxio software $$$...
yet another reason i want to give MrRock something for his effort.

hell i read your Tascam post too... why doesn't Tascam just make it available?? very strange, usually companys try to get every penny they can?? very strange they gove these upgrades for "free"?

on the monitor thing? your stuff sounded like it was mixed and mastered so well??
i'm afraid you'll need some $$ monitors before you get what you want.

the more i think about it...your probably looking at Adams or some other $$$.

all the ones i mention are the Pro's cheap-nearfield set, the consumer checkout set...not their "primo-deluxe-sonic bliss" set.

Hi-Fi Hi!

Great speakers for the home theater/commercial and consumer enviornments.

I would love these in my 7.1 suround system. But I'm not sure they would be an accurate tracking/mixing tool where ultra "flat" SR (signal response) is key to the over-all frequency ballance. [People who go to places like Sound Advice, Penny's or even Radio Shack for their home theater/stereo speakers wouldn't like the sound of their systems on a $3,000.00 pair of Genelics either.] It's kind of like the difference between professional wrestling and the kind you see at the olympics. Olympic wrestling can be really borring to watch but, involves much more skill and endurrance. Ever mix down on a pair of Yamaha NS-10s? You have to work your but off really hard to make them sound good. But, if you can, the resulting mix played back on some really nice "home/consumer" speakers sound fantastic. Thats why those speakers were so popular in pro tracking and mix facilities. (the major recording studios) :o

"once mine is upgraded tho, i plan to send MrRock the same thing I'd paid for it.
$20 or so."

Can I send you $20.00 and you send me one of those quick fix CDs so I can upgrade my 2487 to a 2488? :)

2488 and 2487 upgrade....

I love your exp. articles..like the NS10, or the hassles it was to really use a Tape splicer to make an edit... i'd buy the book.
A george martin book was talking about having to closely monitor the bass as it'd make the needle bounce off the master cutting disc!!..some huge weight dangling around and a needle (nail?) embedding the music to vinyl!!
its just mind boggling really.

working your ass off with the NS10's??
my grandma used to say.. "i don't remember them being good ol' days... outhouses in an Iowa winters, oil lanterns....i love the electricity and having a toilet in the house."
I hear people bashing MP3's andyeah their not sonic perfect as we Audio heads want..but they sound a hell of alot better than my years of scratchy 45's on a cardboard speaker box. now the music is another topic.. its hard to beat the groove back then, I Feel Fine and Get Off MY Cloud... Maybe Baby..

yeah B, i figured your going to be very selective on the speakers. i'm not surprised on this one.

$20!! Not to me, man...but I'll send you Mr Rock's address, he's the Man with the plan or CD in this case.
STATUS: He emailed me its in the mail now!!! This one will work, or i'm a total software idiot..which i'm not.
it WILL work.... :) may the guru of upgrade fairys be on our side.

2487 and 2488...

no 2487 cd yet...should be Monday or Tuesday.

i'll pass it on to you B, just as soon as i can.

i got a good suntan standing by the mailbox all day tho! hehe :)

my Pioneer CDR 555 died. 1999. I remember it like yesterday,
picking the little guy up at the Sears scratch and dent table...
it was marked down from $600 to $235 no box, remote or manual....
its dead.
going to the trash............. or ebay....
