I have a question for anyone that can help me. I am really debating right now on whether to invest in getting the Digi 001, which would include Protools LE or go with CuBase and get another soundcard. My question is, which one, in your opinion, would be the best bet? I am really new in this entire digital studio set up field, and I've heard so many conflicting stories. I am going to be runnning this on a PC. With Digi001 I am interested because it does come with Protools and it has a good number of I/Os. I want to leave my options open to be able to do multiple tracks simultaneously, so I do want a good sound card (like around $700 or more). My only concern is that with the Digi001, it might be a bit more complicated to learn and I know plug-ins might be more expensive.

With the Cubase, I am not sure which soundcard would work best with it. I was looking into the Layla or Mona perhaps, but does anyone have a good suggestion?

Basically, what I want is a good, powerful studio where I won't feel limited in what I can do, and more importantly, I don't want anything that will be so overwhelming that I won't be able to learn it. I want to be able to do pitch shifts, compression, expansions, all that good stuff, I'm just not sure which direction I should go in with software/hardware. I understand it's a matter of personal opinion and choice, but from the folks that use this stuff and have experience, what would you recommend I invest in?

Thanx in advance...

Well I hate to say it but from the reports I hear Pro Tools is, and likely always will be, primarily designed for Macs. However, that said there are some users here who are very happy with the Digi 001 pakcage and are running it on PCs. However, as they have said you need to adhere to the recommended specs on the Digidesign site very carefully.

Also you will get a reduced number of plug-ins compared to the Mac version.

Please read further down as there are have several posts on this issue recently.

I recently invested in the Digi 001 system and I love it! I've worked with Cubase a couple of times but never really liked it (so I'm definitely no Cubase guru!!!) Pro Tools really doesn't have much of a learning curve if you're used to using DAWs but since you're not you could have a little trouble. The best thing to do if you buy one of these programs is to read the manual and check out users groups on the web. Good luck!

I thought the DIGI001 only had 2 inputs, but a bunch of outputs? If this is the case, you'll definately be limited on how you record a full band!!

I thought I read 8 in and outs, I might be wrong. If I do go with Cubase, what soundcard would work best? Are the Echo products pretty good?

VST soundcard and 001 stuff....

If you're going to use Cubase I would highly recommend using the M-Audio Delta series of sound cards.
The cards work well with PC based DAW's and Cubase. As far as Digi001 goes you have to look at hard specs.
001 uses RTAS or Audio Suite plugins, there are fewer of these in the market than say Direct X or VST. Plus 001 is limited to 24 tracks, VST stops at you're PC's limit. I've seen 128 tracks flowing on a super machine using Cubase. How many do you need?

Another thought would be sequencing. The Digi card has a higher latency than the Delta stuff. The Digi sequencer is a bit less friendly than VST.

blahblahblah..... either way you go it will work if you want it to.

the digi001 has more than 2 inputs, it has 2 on the front which are pre amps also. the others are on the back. you can get a digi 001 for $750 right now, they are on sale. a layla is a good card to use with cubase, also look at Motu,Delta 1010, Staudio, aardvark, just to name a few

Damn, you guys know your stuff!!! Thanx, really, that's alot of help. I think I will be going with Cubase. I definitely will use more than 24 tracks, like I said earlier, I want to be able to keep my options open. When I get my system configured, I'll post it up here. I think the Mona is the newest from Echo, right? Any word on how this piece lives up, ratings-wise?
