i use a yamaha aw4416 to record on. when i first started with it, it was a major pita to get set up and recording. now i can plug up 8 inputs, route channels and be ready to set levels / record in about 5 min.
once i get a good track recorded, i burn it to cd/rw, bring it to the computer and do whatever to it (cep, acid, fx yada yada yada). export it as a 24bit wav to cd/rw, and pull it back on yamaha for final mixdown, mastering and cd burning.
also makes it easy to plug in external fx after the recording.
usually i run guitar into digital multi fx unit, then s/pdif to workstation. no hiss, nice and clean. if i realy want to stupid, i will use the analog outs and mic the guitar also. nothing like 6 different tracks of one take to mix together for real texture
.
but im insane also, so you have to figure that in
