I need to buy a gigging piano for the summer and for gigs :). I already own a Yamaha CVP-309 but i can barely lift it let alone take it out!

My budget is round about the £500 range but if anything really stands out i guess i could go over abit.

Heres some of the things i was thinking about.
Buying a controller like the M-Audio ProKeys 88
http://www.maudio.co.uk/products/en_gb/ProKeys88-main.html

and then a module like the Kurzweil ME1
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Feb03/articles/kurzweilme1.asp

Do you think this combination will work out well and the sound will up to a good standard because i know at 500 pounds its not going to sound like the yamaha but is it good enough for live use?

if you have any other suggestions i am all ears!

thanks

Aviv

Personally modules from kurzweil I heard are not that great sounding. You migth be better off buying something like the yamaha p70. I dont know how much 500 euros is american but it doesndt sound like thats a lot to work with.

The p70 is a perfect gigging stage piano imo.

The Roland RD series is pretty good, I like the pianos in those. Yamaha S90 is good as well, although I like the Roland better. The piano in the Korg Triton LE88 is nice too, but you'd have to buy that used.

Since this will be a gigging keyboard, you might want to consider getting a keyboard that has the sounds built in. It's just more convenient not having to worry about carrying the module around, extra cables, etc.

yeah i see what you guys mean
500 pounds is about a 1000 dollars
but i could go up to about 800 (1600ishdollars)
yeah the Roland RD are about 800.

I think its gonna have to be the RD series :)
they look nice and have that 'superior' grand sound.
nice cheersguys

Oh wow you have a wide variety of pianos with that price range. Just go down the store and play with them for as long as you can and really decide which one you want. Thats really the only way. You dont even have to buy it right away afterwards come home and research the ones you really liked and get the features for a couple you are deciding between and also look at reviews and see which one you really want.

fella, the one i really want is way out of my budget
but my local store doesnt have a wide range of proper stage pianos although they have a giant guitar area, not too big on keys.

I gig with the Roland RD-300-SX and a Roland XV5050 sound module.

You RD-300 is out of your budget, however... you can pick up the second hand Roland XV5050 sound module (which has some great sounds) for around £250-£300. That leaves £200 for a really good "controller keyboard" which will have decent aftertouch control etc etc.

What type of music are you playing?

In my opinion, the action on that m-audio is horrific. Just BAD. Check out the casio privia or some of the lower end yamaha pianos.

If you do decide to go for the m-audio, why not get the keystation 88? It's the actual controller version of the prokeys and has no sound, but has all sorts of control surface features, and is about $200 cheaper.

for most guys a controller/module set-up is too much hassle for a live rig... i;ld look into better used stuff perhaps... over here we have an on-line classifieds called craigslist... over there as well??? perhaps something similar??? the roland pianos aren't bad at all personally i'm a big kurzweil fan and play one (pc88mx)... not sure which modules das may have heard... the korg triton line is big over here as well with the home studio set... worth looking at as well... as for me i'ld stear clear of the casios... i used to do service work on them and imo they're crap (sorry)...

I'm a fan of Kurzweil- the sound is usually pretty solid which is what I am most picky about with my keyboards. I've used Roland and Korg, but the piano sound isn't nearly as rich.

just found out kurz sp2x has dropped to $1100 at sweetwater... that would be killer...
