I have used all three many times on snare. Generally, I prefer the beta 57a. Better crack on the snare, better hi hat rejection, more focused 200hz fundamental. Regular 57's work just fine on snare, but pick up a little more hat. With a regular 57 vs a beta 57 on snare in particular, I do not notice as much of the typical sm57 shortcomings (harsh or raspy highs, looser lows). On vocals however the differences between a beta 57a and an sm57 are much greater. The I5 is quite a different mic. Few things to me sound "bad" with proper use of an sm57, but with the Audix I5 things seem very different. I do not know what it is, but I5's seem to either work very well on things, or just not very well at all, whereas the typical sm57 seems to always work about the same. Rarely the best, but never really bad. Before someone wonders whether or not the I5 I have used might be defective, I have used at least 2 dozen different I5's over the past few years and always found the same to be true.
