I have done some researching and really like the AT 4050, but the thing is expensive (500 bucks)

I think I am going to get a Presonus Firebox Audio Interface, that comes with Cubase LE and is compatible with Mac and PC. (I have a PC might get a Mac soon)

Now here comes the decision, Do I just get the two items listed above and skip the mixer, or do I get a good mixer (Mackie 1220) and get a lesser mic such as Studio Projects B-1, or a Shure SM-58/SM-58

Or, do I go for a lesser mixer, a mic such as a Shure SM-7, and the audio interface.

All I am looking to do right now is record rap vocals over beats I have already made, but i also want to record instuments and MIDI onto new tracks pretty soon.

thanks

I forgot to add, I got 834 dollars right now saved up
and
the prices for the shit i was talking about:

AT 4050..........................................................................$500
Presonus Firebox Audio Interface...........................................300
Mackie 1220......................................................................530
Studio Projects B-1..............................................................79
Shure SM-58.....................................................................100
Shure SM-57 (i fucked this up in the previous post)...................90
SM-7...............................................................................350

In order to assess your setup or make reccomendations we need to know your needs. How many I/O's do you need? What are you doing exactly with your set up?

All I need to start out is one mic plugged into it. Then I could rap right?

i would go with the interface first especially if u dont already have something besides your stock sound card..... beyond that im not much help as i've never used any of the things u listed

Ok Just 1 input... well here's a few reccomendations (of gear I have used and or own).

If cost is your major issue right now...

Interface: M-Audio Firewire Solo ($199 new)

Mic: Audio Technica AT4040 ($300 new)
or
ADK Hamburg ($300 new)
or
Shure KSM27 ($300 new)
or
Shure SM7b ($350 new)

Monitors: M-Audio DX4 Monitors  ($149)

Cables: XLR Cable ($15)
(2) 1/4" Instrument Cables to run to monitors ($8)

Misc: Headphones
Free Plugins (http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?item=2&subItem=5)
Your Choice of software
-------------------------------------------------
Total: $671.00 - $721.00

That's about the best I do with your funds. Those are just pieces gear I have used or own, there are other mics and interfaces that are in that price range that will be just as good. Definitely check ebay though you can probably knock off an extra $50 - $75 bucks if you buy used. And you can get some ok entry level monitors, look for the original M-Audio BX5's or Original M-Audio BX8's (every now and then MF has the BX8's for $250-$300 in their clearance section). But all this is just an opinion....

would u actually recomend the dx4's cause i need somethin better then these computer speakers i got

yeah i would, for those on a tight budget. they aren't "great" by any means but they work. I have a pair that I use regularly during night recording because I live in a townhouse my RP8's piss the neighbors off :D

I doubt it, but I wouldn't know considering I've never used any of the Digidesign hardware. I know with the M-Audio gear PTMP doesn't come with it, it's an extra $250.

Id say spend the most money on the monitors, interface (preamp), and mic. I too have the AT4040. Its a very sensitive mic and can pick up alot of low noise, so make sure you got a closet to put it in or a quiet room.

In honesty Id say just continue to save your money until you can get what you want. Cause the last thing you wanna do is keep buying a whole lot of low quality stuff for minor upgrades, and continue to spend money. Or you might want to go with mental's advice.

good luck on ya decisions

Thanks for all the help yall. Que-B, you got some dope tracks. You recording those with that 4040?

Yup all tracks 4040 certified. :)

That at4040 did cost me an arm and leg though.

any help is apprieciated. if u got more questions just let us know. :)

The at4040 is trash. All you need is one of those mics from radio shack and your vocals will sound proffessional! :D Jus kiddin guys! I've really wanted that 4040 but my funds are limited. Thought about gettin it from american musical on a easy payment plan like i bought my monitors. Decided to upgrade my cabling first and then get more gear. Seems like it would be nice to have one "real" mic in my collection. SPC1 sounds great but i'd like different flavor.
