Honestly, there is a hell of a lot more to recording than knowing computers and fruityloops. I have been working in recording studios and recording at home for several years and I am just now at a point to where I can confidently charge people for my services. There is no "learning on the fly". You either need to go beg a studio to hire you as an assistant/intern, or spend the next couple of years recording new garage bands for free. The idea of just buying some gear and going for it is not going to do anyone any good.

That being said, I would recommend one of Cakewalk's lower line programs like guitar tracks or Home Studio. Grab an M-Audo Delta 44 and a cheap mixer, possible a few mics, and just start messing with it. I have spent almost as much time reading and researching as I have recording.

Good luck

Good advice, but check this out. It'll give you some basics in understanding what we talk about and do around here. Once you know a little lingo you can start to narrow the questions you have so we can help you get going towards the fun and frenzy of recording...
