Hi. I'm looking to record from acoustic guitar to the computer memory, save it, listen to the guitar track while singing a vocal track onto it.

Child's play, right? Then I want to put it all together, burn a master CD and have the puppy duplicated by the hundreds.

All this to deal with the people who come up to me while I'm playing and ask, "Do you have a CD?"

So...what do I need? I expect to buy a computer - how much memory will it take? I have a copy of Cakewalk, but it seems more oriented toward writing huge scores off of a MIDI input board.

Okay, the computer. Next, what software do I need to accept acoustic signal and record it onto disk? Is the same program good for mastering the songs?

What goes between the instrument mic and the computer?

Is there any difference between CD-R burners? If so, what do I want?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I figure you folks are working with a lot more complicated things than this, and I'd appreciate the advice.

Thanks.

suggestions

you have asked a lot of questions allright.

i might suggest a couple of things.

research the website infront of the bbs (www.homerecording.com) and get oriented to the process and terminology.

computer recording is only one of many options.

there are many manufacturers making "studio in a box" or SIB's.

Yamaha, Fostex, Korg, Zoom, Tascam all make studio recorders.

Then, there are the HD recorders and ADATS.

Once you decide on the medium to record upon, you have only just begun ( hey....there might be a song in that....) anyway

then you need microphones for the guitar and vocals, preamps, equalizers, compressors, effects processors, cords. Studio amplifiers, monitor systems, mixing boards,

then you have to learn to use all of the above mentioned items. (takes several years)

then you have to learn to record/track
then you have to learn how to mix
then you have to learn how to master
THEN YOU NEED THE EQUIPMENT TO MASTER UPON.
then you need the equipment to duplicate with.

Sorry dude. it aint quite as easy as pushing the big red button, and walking away with an emmy.

I am not trying to discourage you. I am asking you to do a little research, educate yourself, and then take a realistic look at the process.

good luck

Emmy's are for television.
