What do i need to run midi from a keyboard to my computer?

I just purchased a very basic keyboard with MIDI. I know basically nothing about midi though and i am trying to figure out how i run it from my keyboard to my computer. Do i have to have a soundcard for that or is there a way to do it through USB or firewire?
 
If you already have a keyboard that you like, you can either get a midi interface or an adapter cable to go to the joystick port of your sound card (if it has one). there are usb midi interfaces and usb keyboards available if you don't have a midi port or joystick port.
 
well is there anything that I can buy for the keyboard i already have to run from the midi port on it to USB?
 
any suggestions on a good one to buy? and what are some good programs to input midi with?

thanks, a lot and does anyone happen to know if garage band on mac computers runs midi cause i am purchasing a mac very soon
