help !

I can't figure out which setting I changed to cause this-

I used to be able to turn on my external soundcard, then put a CD in the PC tower, and get it on my Yorkville Studio monitors, for referencing my mixes with studio CD's.

I hadn't done this in the last 3 months,, now all the sudden this has stopped working,,, but it works once I turn the soundcard off and have the PC speakers on---

searched hi& low for some sort of setting somewhere I may have messed up- any ideas? The PC CD player isn't recognizing my soundcard for some reason?. Luckily my recording software is still alright & working normal.

this is such a mystery, especially since it used to work fine.

The PC and the Windows media player are communicating alright when I use the PC speakers. This is problem is happening with Winamp too.

I don't know if this is a clue,

but when I use the Windows Media Player + CD in the PC tower + PC speakers not only does the sound work properly but I get the Visualization (bouncing EQ bars)

When I turn off the PC speakers and use my soundcard and my monitors, the Visualization does =not= start up (of course no sound either). But the CD info comes up properly and the time marches on when the track plays.

I checked all the Windows volume/mixer settings and they all look right, nothing is muted and all faders are up.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

you mentioned an external soundcard but omitted telling us what it is !!
whats the brand ?
masybe you should think what changes you made to your pc in the last 3 months ? or maybe you download a program that changed some settings ?

What sound card?

hi, its an Edirol UA-5 external USB soundcard box-thing

its weird. I mean everything works perfectly when recording/monitoring with the soundcard and my software (Cakewalk + Edirol UA-5)

and it worked perfectly a few months ago

yeah sorry, I just put it above

I definitely have installed new stuff recently - games, anti-virus, etc..

but I can't find the settings to check. I think I've checked all the obvious ones, are there some deeper innerds to the Windows Media player in particular that I can get to ?

This may seem like a really obvious question but...
Are you sure that in the Sound settings
(Under the control panel) the Edirol is set for playback?

Hmm... odd. I had a similar problem here at work... It was with the integrated audio card and was simply that the Audio cable wasn't connected from the CD-ROM to the Motherboard... I know that's not the case here though...
