IMHO, there's not a lot of difference when looking for good levls whether coming in DI or not.
One main difference between the two can be that if you're coming in DI without any compression or limiting, your dynamics can be all over the place; a miked git amp tends to have some "natural compression" (for lack of a better term offhand) built into it, whereas a strainght DI is at the mercy of the the control of the performer and the natural output of the git. This can make straight DI w/o any in-line dynamics control a bit tougher when it comes to watching out for the peaks.
But as long as you keep the peaks tamed to come in under 0dBFS (I prefer leaving a good 2dB-3dB buffer at the top, myself), you should be OK.
IMHO, YMMV and all that.
