what condenser mic?

hello!!!

im going to record my drums with 2 mics, beta 52 on the kick and a condenser mic on the rest of the drums. any suggestions on what condenser mic i should go for?
 
The beta 52a is a good mic for the kick. But normally you would put a mic onto each of the drumms. something along the lines of a SM57 on toms/snare to get started. Then Have some overheads to pick up hats and symbols.


But if you aint got to much to spend. Something like the Oktava 012-01 Matched Pair would be good to pick up the whole kit. But personally its better to mic each drum.

john bonham, mitch mitchell and ringo starr got away with using 2/3 mics, why cant this guy?!

Well, they weren't using cheap chinese mics, that's why. Ringo had Neumann U47s as overheads.

Also, if you prefer the sound of 2-3 mics, thats great! Personally I don't think it can hold a candle to how drums sound today. Bonham's kit sounded great for the time it was recorded in, and because we've only heard it that way it's become engrained in our minds that its an awesome sound which couldn't be any other way.

In reality there are times when that "vintage sound" doesn't always sound better. Drums did NOT sound better then than they do today with close micing. (IMHO)

BTW, I also think you can get a fine sound with just kick and overheads. It just won't sound AS good.

Thats why i said personally, use a mic on each drum. I wasnt saying he had to. =)

How good does your room sound? You could get a multi-pattern so you could OH on omni, so save your placement problems. Depends how much money you have to spend. I just bought a Studio Projects B3 for percussion, but the best multi-pattern mic I've used is the Audio Technica AT4050 ... perhaps the AT4033 or AT4040 would suit if you're only using cardioid?
 
why 2 mics

the reason why im going to use only 2 mics is because im going to record it on a tascam dp-01 fx which is only capable of recording 2 tracks simoultanously.. and i figured it to be best to use a condenser mic on the rest of the drums.. i just dont have any clue on what mic to get, what mics are good or bad.. help me out..
