I am recording guitar and I need a compressor/gate that will help make the sound tighter. I hope to pay under $300 for it. I've seen a few for about $140-$200 but I don't know if they're any good. Does anybody have any good suggestions for this? Thanks in advance.

Behringer MDX2200 Composer Pro. Not expensive, does a good job.

"The Chinese components in my gear are better quality than the Chinese components in your gear." :D

"If your gear doesn't have Chinese components in it, it's probably overpriced." :D :D

Ahhh dobro...

I'm willing to take that challenge...

Hey, Dob, sounds like a bumper sticker

Why not just rephrase that:

"Bye American, buy Chinese".

I second the RNC. Great little unit under $200.

Well, being a citizen of the world and all, I don't much care where the stuff is produced or comes from - if it's okay, good or great, it gets the thumbs up from me. Nationalistic considerations seem to me a somewhat less than entirely intelligent basis for gear purchase, if you get my drift.

And anyway, I upgraded my soundcard last week, buying the S/PDIF add-on for my Wave/824. As I was looking it over before I installed it, I noticed that one or two parts of the card had been made in China. It's an American card. Where exactly do you draw the line? Just *how* American is my card, would you say? My Rode mic's Australian, with a Chinese condenser, apparently. Does that make it less Australian than boomerangs, do you think?

Finally, my comments about the Behringer unit stand - it's good gear. The comments in quotation marks and accompanied by smilies were jokes. I've got no idea how the Behringer compares to the RNC, but I'd love to know.

No comparison at all - the RNC would compress the Behringer down to nothing - WITHOUT any noticeable artifacts!!! ;)

Absolutely no "nationalistic considerations"! Purely economical. I personally can't stand the "buy american" attitude, when it's just based on patriotism. Hey, I invented the "citizen of the world" saying :)

...it's good gear...

Hmmm... some people think the Alesis 3630 is good gear too... put it next to an RNC and it's inarguable the RNC will beat it hands-down...

I'd put the Behringer in the same class as the 3630 - for beginners, fine... for anything more serious... forgedabowdit...

Ah, another pro falls into my clever trap, the never-ending search for knowledge.

Discarding Get a Life gear which no one would ever touch, and Engineer Gear which engineers buy because they're trying to maintain face validity/peer credibility (ie, they can't afford *not* to be seen to be keeping up), that leaves the gear for serious home recordists. I thought originally there were two grades of home recording gear, but now I think there might be three: okay, good and great.

It's obvious think Bruce Blue Bear has got more experience than me. For this reason, I think that, without having bought an RNC, I may have established that RNC is Good Gear, and the Behringer Composer Pro is Okay Gear. If I'm right, there must be compressors better than the RNC that a lot of pros would just sniff at. Am I right?

hmmm.... I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at... at the high-end of the scale you've got the Manleys, Avalons, Focusrite....

But most pros rate the RNC pretty highly, even compared to the high-end gear... about the only thing comparable between the RNC vs Alesis and/or Behringer is price............

Bru... aw heck... you know...
Blue... ya know that too!

:)

I don't get it. How can that be? The RNC's so cheap. There must be something between it and pro compressors.

Check out http://www.mercenary.com... if the description doesn't answer your question, email Fletcher (at the site) and ask him.... or go to deja.com/usenet and search R.A.P. (rec.audio.pro) for the keyword RNC....

It will all become clear to you my son!!!

where is it ?

Hey Bruce , check that link, i can't seem to get there from here, Hell i can't get to alot of places.
Thats it !

Bruce - other people on other boards agree - the Behringer's merely Okay Gear, the RNC's Good or Great Gear. Definitely great for the money. Ashly was mentioned also (CLX52) - two channels of stereo compression for $410 at zzounds, but for the price differential, you'd have to be *really* hooked on independent compression controls to go for it.

How come the RNC's so cheap? Chinese parts? :D

...How come the RNC's so cheap? Chinese parts?...

That can't be it, then the Behringer WOULD be in the same league as the RNC!!! :)

Mind you, the RNC is single-channel...
