I know what proximity effect is, but what causes it, and why do some mics have a more pronounced one than others.

When the mic is very close to the source, the sound level is greater in the front of the mic than from the rear. That reduces the efficency of the port to cancel out low frequencies, and that results in a bass boost.

Because some mic's are designed to reduce the proximity effect by the body design and adding holes and or a rolloff switch.

also it depends on the pick-up pattern.

an omni mic has no venting ports, therefore has no proximity effect. some hypercardiods and figure 8 mics have a whollop of a proximity effect...

we really need harvey for this one... in terms of explaning the physics.

Oh yeah...... and also it depends on the pick-up pattern.

AMEM.......... and a lot of the other ones too.

I am starting to get the idea, but what are venting ports?

There the little holes or slots in the mic capsule or handle of a mic that help keep the sound to be more even between the front and back of the mic which helps to reduce the proximity effect.

Yeah, some assholes ran him off. Now we are just a bunch of wanabes giving out mostly bullshit/hearsay information to any question more complicated than "where can I find X for the lowest price?"

Harvey's knowledge, experience, humor and good heart will be sorely missed here.

Not quite... He's still around, although it would be hard to blame him for taking a hiatus. Have faith...

No one ran Harvey off. He just decided he didn't particularly share some of the views or approve of some of the personalities here and made a conscious decision to take what I'm assuming to be a hiatus. :D And it appears Wide Awake and Eeldip did a very commendable job in his absence.

Look, if you really want to draw the guy out, we all need to start explaining things to people all wrong. Then the Harvster will feel compelled to jump in and correct us. He can't help it.

(btw - that's all I'm saying about this matter -- if this turns ugly in any way, I'm out of it)

Yeah, and maybe we need to start telling everyone that the AKG C1000S is the BEST mic for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. :D

If I were Harvey I would never come back to this place to be trashed by the envious puerile adolescent level minds who can't produce anything themselves, so sit around in their cyberpseudorealityworlds all day pretending to be heavyhitter RE's.

Anyway, here's a link to an explanation of the proximity effect.

It's not!?

I'm biting my tongue on this one, but just a suggestion: I think the kind of stuff you're posting right now might have just as much (if not more) to do with with his distaste for this forum. And I am asking you kindly to refrain from it if you really want to see things improve. You have a right to be upset, but I'm not sure this is the sort of thing that will make him want to "come back," so to speak.

Just a very respectful request. Thanks!

Most of the time when I'm online, I'm either sitting out by the pool typing on my labtop and pounding down beer, or bored as hell and stuck at our RV and boat storage lot, or dicking around at our studio. Right now it's 102 degrees here and I'm on the laptop and drinking beer..... and I'll have a good buzz on pretty soon.... so get ready for some good old flamming. :D

I am sorry that my question ressurected this acrimony.

On the other hand, crazydoc, the article you linked to was EXCELLENT. It cleared up a lot of things, including why larger and thicker diaphrams would tend to have more of the proximity effect.

It's about time you produced something other than meanful trash.... and a link is better than the nothing. :D

Oh, I see. Now that you've shit all over the room, you want us all to sit in it without complaining. I would suggest in the future that you try to make it to the bathroom when the urge hits, and wipe your ass before you leave. That's all I have to say on the subject.

"Just a very respectful request."

Sorry to dump on your thread like this - just had to get it off my chest, and it seemed like an appropriate spot when eeldip noted we could use Harvey on this one. I'm glad you found the link helpful.

Crazydoc,

Your thoughts on the matter are appreciated.

But they have no place here.

Your statements are unnecessary . . . off-topic, and not even provoked.

The only possible intent I can think of would be to instigate a flame war. In short, it's pretty trollish behavior.

I'm reporting your post to the moderator, and I implore others to do the same if they would be so inclined.

Thanks again.
