Hi, I need to get some midi cables and maybe also some adat cables.

I see that Hosa, Proco, Monster, Horizon make alot of these. I ended up getting some Aleise adat cables. Do you know what kind quality matters here for ADAT, SPDIF, and MIDI?

I've heard Hosa are terrible and Monster are great but overpriced. What do you think based on your experiance?

Thanks,

Mongoo

Since MIDI isn't actually transferring audio, you don't need top notch cables. Durability and repairability/warranty should be your main concern. I own some Monster cables, but I won't buy any more due to their shady business practices (and they are overpriced). www.markertek.com has decent prices on lots of cables.

What about..

How do you feel about proco cables?

What shady business practices have monster been pulling?

On a side note, I also need to find some mic stands. What brands or models get the nod here?

Thanks,

Mongoo

Proco and Horizon are both decent. I got some Horizon MIDI cables from AMS that came with 1 pin slightly bent, but i was able to fix 'em. They all work fine.

Monster is into product branding. They've obtained trademarks for products that they don't even produce. When some other company comes along and decides to use the word "monster" in the name of their product, Moster sues them. They're assholes.

I'm not a fan of proco or hosa, but they're probably fine for midi. Monster Cable has filed "cease and desist" orders against many companies outside of the audio world that use the word Monster in their name (Monster House, Monster Snowboards, etc.). Most of these smaller companies do not have the money to fight Monster Cable in court, so they are having to change their names, despite the fact that, legally, they have no precedent for such actions.

so..

I checked out marketek and they only had "whirlwind Midi cables". very cheap, like $8 for 20 feet. I will probably need two 6 foot midi cables and two 20 foot ones. With monster selling there 12 foot cables at $25, do you know for a fact this Whirlwind brand is comperable?

Yet another side question. I have a 8 channel preamp with Adat out to hook up to my recorder. It's on the way anyways in the mail. Do I need to hook up the Adat sync? What happens if I don't, and If I do hook it up is it self operating or do I need to change a setting within my recorder?

Thanks,

Mongoo

You can make MIDI cables out of balanced audio wire, since MIDI only uses three of the five prongs in the connector.

I've owned many different types of MIDI cables: HOSA, Conquest, Mogami (yes you can get Mogami MIDI cables), and many generic MIDI cables that ship with synths from Roland, Korg, Yamaha, etc. They all seem to perform the same.
