They are generically called Gobos a short name for "go betweens"
That tubular variety is just one of many. Typically they are a compressed fibreglass tube that has been filled with more fibreglass and then covered with cloth.
They are used to absorb slap back echo but also tobreak up the reflections like a diffusor of sorts in an attemp to change the acoustics of the room.

I definately think so.
What is nice is you can put them around vocalists to tame room reverb and reflections, or acoustic guitar... I made some (not round) that I use, so that I end up recording most everything in the bigger romm and can tame the room from lively to nearly dead just by bringing more of the gobos close to the recording source.

I had a friend that made his own round ones by going to a commercial airconditioning supply house and getting the compressed fiberglass ducting. He stuffed the cavity inside with fiberglass and made wood plugs for the ends, covered them in fabric and mounted them on mic stands.

worth getting for a home studio?
*IF* your broadband situation is already good, go for it. If not (I'm just assuming it's not at this point), then work on overall low-broadband trapping for the space first.

Always the low end first. Always. Without exception.

If they don't improve the quality of your recordings, you can take a saw to them and make your own mini-Stonehenge, for added cred...
