how does one set up volume levels for mixing. the computer has its own volume control(the master volume and wave volume),the mixer also has its own volume and the amplifier also has a volume nob.

what levels should all this volumes be set at when working on a mix?

When you're working on a mix you should understand what you are doing. We have a Newbie section here just for that. Give it a whirl.

The answer to your question depends on alot of variables, so in short there is no easy answer.

It's all personal. There are documents written stating that your monitors (I guess you could call this the master volume, or the level of sound coming from your speakers) should be about 85db. I guess you'd have to buy an SPL meter to calibrate that.

Personally, I just listen loud enough to hear how it will sound at high volumes, and also periodically turn it down to hear how it sounds at low volumes.

At high volumes it shouldn't sound harsh or fatiguing.
At medium volumes it should sound balanced and clear.
At low volumes it should still sound balanced and not 'wimpy'.

That's basically how I do it though and I'm by no means a professional. ;) Use your judgment.
