Im not sure what exactly goes into a tracking session.

Im not sure what steps are done here, Im told to do the tracking process and than rest your ears so that you can have fresh ears after tracking for recording,

So Im trying to learn what is all done and is involved with teh tracking process,

I think you meant, rest your ears after tracking for mixing.

yeah, sorry, I just read Blue Bears articles and I seen that in there,

So is the tracking process the whole recording tweaking signal process? Is it basically EVERYTHING involved with recording up until mixing?

tracking is going to be the process where you capture sounds, or creating tracks (hence, "tracking"). Usually, to keep the creative flow of the musicians, very little sound tweaking (like adding EQ, compression, etc) is done here.

Prior to tracking, you need to dial in the sound you want (setting tone knobs on amps, working with mic placement, etc). That has to happen before tracking

After you've captured all the raw tracks, then you go into mixing, where you sprinkle a little EQ, a dash of compression, some reverb here and there, and of course, level setting and panning.

This is an EXTREME oversimplification, but should give you the basic idea.

Yeah, Iv been registered here for a while and been reading up on alot of guitar stuff adn so on, but as far as mixing goes, Im a newbie, but a dedicated newbie : ) -

thanks for all the suggestions guys!

for me everything but mixing is included in tracking, but that's cuz I don't do it right. I do a little writing, sound tweaking, song struture changes, editing. Alot of this stuff should be done before you lay down you tracks, or after. But I just do it all at the same time so I don't get bored and since it's me doing everything I can get away with it. If you're recording a band though, they're not going to want to sit there while you play around with tweaking the sounds or editing some takes.
