total newbie here...
Just want to know whether I can run my mixer to my awe64 sound card's 1/8" line in and mic in? What convertor is needed?
Does the mic have to go through the mixer to the mic in? (or, in other words, does the mixer act as an pre-amp?)
Let's say, I have a mic on channel one and a guitar on channel two. Do I run two lines into the sound card from the mixer or just one combined signal?
Note that I don't really have a mixer yet, but am thinking of getting one...
What do you guys think of this... RQ200

What if I have a program like cakewalk and like to record the vocal and guitar on different channels/tracks so that I can edit them?

...or record them one at a time. Lay down the guitar track, and then put the vocals to the guitar in a seperate take.

I c....but what's the point of getting a mixer if I can't record simultaneously?

The mixer will bring mic level up to line level and also may provide phantom power for a condenser mic should you ever get one. Lots of other uses for a mixer- just search around here for ideas.
As to simultaneous recording- you could record vocals to the left channel and guitar to the right and then mix them to the desired stereo placement on the computer.
 
Yeah, drstawl... but this way, I wouldn't be able to edit individual tracks using Cakewalk Pro's plug-ins, would I?
I guess it's either one or the other?
Another small question - when the mixer turns the mic in to line level , I can plug the output to my 1/8" line in or mic right? (by using a convertor?)

In general you WOULD have this capability. It depends on how much separation you get when you track it. If you're feeding an electric guitar to one channel and a vocal track to another you should get some very good separation. Two mics fed to the mixer at the same time and located near to each other will always get some degree of bleed that depends on placement and the sensitivity of each mic. Then each track will be a mono .wav file that you can edit all you want.
Yes- once the signal is at line level you'll need an adapter (a converter is a little different) to match the physical connectors available at each end of the wire(s) if they don't match on their own.
Use the LINE IN on your soundcard.
Shun the MIC IN on any soundcard crappier than the Echo Mona as if it were the black plague.
Some midrange cards like the MONA have decent mic pres built in. Most others don't. Those expect line level signals.
